Lewistown sweeps doubleheader

BELLEVILLE –The top three teams in the Mifflin County Babe Ruth League won on Wednesday and Lewistown did something that it hasn’t done since 2021.
MCVEYTOWN 7, BELLEVILLE 3
BELLEVILLE — McVeytown (10-1) won its 10th game of the year with a 7-3 win over Belleville.
Jake Knable picked up the win on the mound. He pitched five and two-third innings. Knable struck out three, walked four and gave up eight hits. Carson Cherry came into the game and got the last four outs, all strikeouts and picked up the save.
McVeytown had seven hits with Cherry getting two including a solo home run. Cherry’s home run came in the third inning and gave McVeytown a 3-1 lead.
Trayven Shaffer also had two hits for the league leaders including a double.
Belleville finished with eight hits. Isaiah Sharp had two hits including a double and Levi Sharp also had a two-base hit.
Belleville closed the gap to 5-3 in the sixth with two runs, but then Cherry arrived on the mound to close out the rally and the game.
BEAVER SPRINGS 15, STRODES MILLS 5
LEWISTOWN — Second-place Beaver Springs (10-3) kept pace with McVeytown with a 15-5 win over Strodes Mills.
Springs scored seven runs in the first inning and never looked back. Beaver Springs used four pitchers, Vance Gregg, Travis Henry, Brayden Herbster and River Knepp. Gregg went the first two innings and got the win.
Beaver Springs used a 15-hit attack to gain the win. Derek Keister and Maverick Smith each had three hits, while Max Trawitz and Henry each had two hits. Beaver Springs had five extra-base hits with the highlight coming from Trawitz, an inside-the-park home run.
The other extra-base hits were doubles, two from Smith and one each from Dale Davidson and Drake Groowski.
Strodes Mills finished with nine hits. Cam Kwalczik and Kaden Hook each had two. Cathen Kibe and Raul Rodriguez each had doubles.
BURNHAM 3, BELLTOWN 2
BURNHAM — Burnham (8-3) edged Belltown. 3-2, for its third win in a row. Liam Shaffer got the win as he pitched into the seventh inning.
Shaffer had 11 strikeouts, walked four and gave up five hits. Noah Wray came in to get the last out and the save.
Burnham scored a run in the first inning and added two more in the third. Belltown came up with a run in the third and scored one in the sixth.
Noah Wolfkiel singled in the first and later scored on a sacrifice fly from Cohen Leister. In the third, Leister had an RBI double and Wray had a sacrifice fly.
In the sixth, Belltown’s Kyler Baker singled, went to second on a passed ball and scored on a Kyle Shirk base hit. Belltown got outstanding pitching from Kale Beaver and Luke Shawver.
Belltown outhit Burnham, 5-4. Belltown had two hits from Kyler Baker and Shirk and Kaden Baker had a double.
Burnham got hits from Wolfkiel, Shaffer, Blake Royer and Leister.
LEWISTOWN 12, REEDSVILLE 10
MILROY — Reedsville led 9-1 after two innings, but couldn’t hold the lead and lost the first game of a doubleheader, 12-10. In the second game Lewistown also won 6-4 and the two wins moved Lewistown (4-8) past Belleville (3-11) into seventh place.
The last time Lewistown won a doubleheader was on June 24, 2021 against Belltown.
Every man in the Reedsville lineup got a hit in the first game. Reedsville sent 12 men to the plate in the second inning. At one point, Reedsville recorded seven straight hits. Zander Lawson had the big hit in the second, a two-run single. He later scored on a double steal.
Lewistown’s Wyatt Foltz, a rookie, got the start and the win. Once he got settled after the second inning, he recorded the next 11 outs and only gave up one run. From the second to the sixth, he only gave up three hits. Another rookie, Landon Cunningham, got the save. He gave up no runs, two hits and struck out three.
Reedsville finished with 16 hits. Jude Zook and Caden McClure each had three, while Lawson and Jamieson Parkes each had two. Zook had the only extra-base hit for Reedsville in the second inning, a two-run double.
Lewistown had 14 hits in its come-from-behind win. Chris Ritter and Foltz each had three hits. Cunningham had two hits and the only extra-base hit came from Jared Sickles, a double.
LEWISTOWN 6, REEDSVILLE 4
MILROY– Lewistown went to another rookie, Cure Kochendefer, to pitch the second game of the doubleheader and it paid off.
Kochenderfer pitched into the seventh. He held Reedsville to four runs, struck out two and gave up nine hits. Landon Bowen came in to get the last out and picked up the save.
Lewistown only had four hits in the win, two each from Jared Sickles and Gabe Wilson.
Reedsville had two multiple hitters in the second game, Caden McClure and Jamieson Parkes (two each).
Reedsville’s Cam Kauffman pitched into the sixth and had seven strikeouts.
The last time Reedsville lost a doubleheader was on June 24, 2019 to Burnham.
