MECHANICSBURG – Thanks to Anthony Macri, the Morgan Cup trophy will
stay in the Williams Grove Speedway office for another season.
Macri, of Dillsburg, dominated the 30-lap Morgan Cup Saturday night
earning $20,000 against the World of Outlaws sprint car series. The
trophy is named after former track owner, Morgan Hughes.
It was Macri’s fourth career win with the series, and his third of the
season at the Grove keeping his undefeated streak alive.
He actually lost the lead mid-race in traffic, but following a red
flag stoppage, he turned up the wick and was never challenged again.
It was his first Grove Outlaw win.
“It’s surreal, really,” Macri said. “I didn’t know if we were going to
be standing up here before the red came out. I had to pick my pace up.
We worked on the car, I got the wing back, and here we are.”
Macri powered by polesitter Bill Balog off the second turn taking the
lead on the opening lap. Balog’s best Williams Grove performance came
to an end when he spun out one lap later.
Macri controlled the restart over Donny Schatz and David Gravel as
Danny Dietrich and Logan Schuchart battled for fourth.
Macri’s lead was up to 1.4 seconds on lap four.
Dietrich secured the spot and then took a shot at Gravel. Carson
Macedo was up to fifth from the 10th starting spot.
Schatz quickly closed on the leader as they started lapping slower
traffic. An inside move off the fourth turn gave Schatz the lead on
lap 10.
Macri got back around Schatz off the second turn, retaking the top spot.
Macedo and Dietrich went back and forth for the third spot. Schatz
kept Macri within striking distance at the half-way point.
A violent fourth turn crash stopped the race. TJ Stutts spun and
collected Macedo and then Schuchart slammed Macedo’s car. They were
okay.
Macri controlled the restart over Schatz and Gravel. Justin Whittall
raced by Dietrich and into fifth.
With a clear track, Macri raced away from the field.
Macri started lapping slower cars again as battles raged behind him
between Gravel and Schatz and Whittall and Dietrich.
Gravel couldn’t make up any ground in traffic over the final laps as
Macri remained undefeated at the Grove this season. Dietrich took
third from Schatz. Whittall completed the top five. Lincoln Speedway
winner Buddy Kofoid, 18th starter Freddie Rahmer, Sheldon
Haudenschild, Gio Scelzi and Troy Wagaman Jr. rounded out the top 10.
Schuchart set the fastest lap in qualifying at 16.472. Schuchart,
Gravel, Macri, and Whittall won the eight-lap heat races. Daryn
Pittman won the C-main. Balog won the dash. Ashton Torgerson won the
Last Chance Showdown.
