DILLSBURG -- After watching his defense get torched by Bedford County for 36 points in the first, Mifflin County Tomahawks linebacker Michael Tiernan knew making a few halftime changes could turn the tide.
And did it ever.
The Tomahawks corralled the Buffaloes in the second half and rallied for a thrilling 40-36 victory in Great Eastern Football Association (GEFA) action on Saturday.
"Our defense struggled in the first half, we made some halftime adjustments and shut them down in the second half," Tiernan said.
The Tomahawks (2-1) trailed 36-22 at intermission but blanked Bedford County (1-2) over the final two quarters to flip the script in the comeback.
Mifflin County's offense also stepped up as quarterback Rob Albros scampered for several big runs and scored two rushing touchdowns.
"I knew I needed to be a threat to run in order to open up the pass," Albros said.
The Tomahawks' Isaiah Edwards also scored two touchdowns in the game, while Timmy Beck added another.
"We've got to come together as a team," Mifflin County head coach Brian Rodgers said. "I think today was a big step."
The win enabled the Tomahawks to remain within one game of Mountain Conference leader Moshannon Valley (3-0), which beat Mifflin County in Lewistown on April 5. The rematch is set for June 14. The Vikings routed Indiana County 78-18 on Saturday.
The Tomahawks head back out on the road on Saturday, traveling to Indiana County to take on the Crusaders.
