Seals storm past Indians, 19-9

MIFFLINTOWN -- Juniata dropped their first game of the 2025 softball season on Wednesday, 19-9, in five innings versus Selinsgrove.
The Seals (1-1) got home runs from Molly Hess, Sadie Bigger and Danika Burd in the road victory. Burd tallied four RBIs. Hess and Alyvia Herrold each posted three ribbies.
The Seals held a 14-4 lead through the first three innings of play.
Juniata started to wake up by scoring three runs in the third stanza, one in the fourth and four in the fifth.
"The intensity we had in the fifth inning is the intensity we need to start the game with. If they would have played the whole game with that level of urgency it would have been a different game," Indians head coach Craig Bubb noted.
"We have a lot of inexperience with the pitching staff and we asked them going into today to throw the ball across the plate, have not a lot of walks, let them put the ball in play and we'll play defense behind you. They (pitching staff) did that and our defense kind of let us down a little bit."
The Indians' approach at the plate improved in the fifth frame. So much so that the Seals made a pitching change before wrapping up the contest.
"They (Juniata hitters) actually took a better approach to the plate. I think we were a little over anxious. Our timing was a little off and we just didn't attack the ball. We were kind of just waving at it. In that last inning we had some aggressive swings. We swung at good pitches and the key to hitting line drives to the gaps is hitting good pitches," Bubb added.
The Seals corralled 13 hits and scored five times in the second and third frames. Then, they dropped in four runs to secure victory.
Juniata notched six hits in the loss.
Juniata (0-1) hosts Milton at 4:30 p.m. on Friday. The Seals host East Pennsboro on Friday.
