BELLEVILLE -- Grant Yoder scored a game-high 14 points and Clay Ammon had eight points and Devin Yoder added seven points as Belleville Mennonite grabbed the early lead and fended off Columbia-Montour Vo-Tech 44-39 in non-league action on Saturday.
Yoder pumped in eight points in the first quarter for the Thunder (2-4), including hitting a pair of three-pointers as the Thunder led 14-8. Colin Hartzler added four of his six points in the frame.
In the second quarter, Belleville Mennonite extended its margin to 27-19 at the half after Ethan Renno netted all of his five points in the period, including a trey.
Ammon and Yoder went to work in the third with four points each as the Thunder saw their lead shrink to 37-33. Yoder hit three foul shots in the final stanza and Yoder added a pair to set the final.
Tyson Brown led the Rams (1-7) with 14 points, while Axton Moses added eight points. Columbia-Montour Vo-Tech made only 7 of 21 foul-shot attempts, while the Thunder connected on 11 of 17.
Belleville Mennonite returns to action on Saturday at Forbes Road.
Tigers toppled by
visiting Forbes Road
COCOLAMUS -- East Juniata's Wrett Smith scored 17 points and Sam Kopacki added 11 points but it wasn't enough as the Tigers fell 79-48 in non-league action on Saturday.
Jacoby Knepper's 35-point effort led Forbes Road (7-1), which led 22-13 after the first quarter and 42-23 at the half. Smith and Nathan Carolus each scored five points in the opening quarter for East Juniata (3-5). Smith and Brayant Carrasquillo each had three points in the second quarter.
Kopacki pumped in six points in the third quarter and Eric Nipple added a three. Smith, who finished the contest with five threes, hit three of those in the final quarter, but the game had been decided by that point.
Michael Strait added 17 points for the Cardinals.
East Juniata travels to Fairfield on Saturday.
Trojans split pair at
Huntingdon tourney
HUNTINGDON -- A night after losing to Huntingdon 66-50 in the opening round of the Huntingdon Lions Tournament, held at Juniata College, on Friday, the Mount Union Trojans bounced back to beat Juniata Valley 58-41 in the consolation game.
The Trojans (6-4) led 10-8 after the first quarter then extended their lead to 26-19 at the break. Mount Union continued to dominate play, outscoring the Hornets (3-7) 14-9 in the third quarter and 18-13 in the final stanza.
Mount Union plays at Moshannon Valley on Wednesday, Jan. 8.
Indians fall twice at
Candy Cane Classic
HALIFAX - After falling to Camp Hill 62-47 in the opening round of the Candy Cane Classic Friday, the Juniata Indians dropped a 57-37 decision to Lancaster Country Day in the consolation game on Saturday.
Against LCD, Caden Swailes led the Indians (3-6) with 12 points, including six in the first quarter as Juniata led 16-10 early. Jasper Shepps scored eight of his 11 points in the second quarter as the Indians held a slim 26-25 lead at the half.
The Cougars (3-4) took control by dominating the third quarter, 20-4, and winning the fourth, 12-7. Swailes had a bucket in each frame, while Damien Vance added three of his seven points in the second half.
Cam Harris paced LCD with a game-high 21 points, while Jordan Ashby had 10 points and Chris Dukes added nine points.
Juniata visits Meadowbrook Christian on Monday, Jan. 6.

Rennos combine for 40 as Thunder roll
BELLEVILLE - Katelyn Renno scored a game-high 23 points and Korina Renno added 17 points as Belleville Mennonite School dominated Columbia-Montour Vo-Tech 56-33 in non-league action on Saturday.
Katelyn Renno came out firing dropping in seven points in the opening quarter as Belleville Mennonite (4-3) led 18-9 early. Korina Renno added five points in the period.
Elaina Peachey struck for six of her eight points in the second quarter as the Thunder built a 27-16 lead at the half. Katelyn Renno and Korina Renno accounted for all but one of the Thunder's 14 points in the third as Katelyn scored eight points - with three buckets and two foul shots - and Korina added five - with two buckets and a free throw. The Thunder led 41-21 after three quarters.
In the fourth, Belleville Mennonite continued to pull away as Korina Renno netted seven points - with a three and four foul shots - and Katelynn added six - with three buckets.
Taylor Nevus paced the Rams (0-9) with 18 points, while Ava Greshko added seven points.
The Thunder are at Forbes Road on Saturday.
Lowrey, Landis
lead Indians
HALIFAX - Regan Lowrey scored a game-high 19 points and Juniata's defense limited host Halifax to nine points in the second half as the Indians captured the Halifax Candy Cane Classic with a 59-30 victory on Saturday.
Mylee Landis struck for five of her 12 points in the first quarter as Juniata (6-2) led 13-12 early. Grace Reinhold added six of her 10 points in the second as the Indians took a 24-21 lead into the lockerroom.
Juniata used a 13-7 run in the third quarter to extend its lead to 37-28, thanks to four points by Lowrey and four more by Sara Montoya. The Indians put the game away by holding Halifax to a McKenna Vo bucket in the fourth, outscoring the Wildcats 22-2. Lowrey accounted for 10 points, while Lindsea Gilson added four.
Lauren Sharbaugh was leading scorer for Halifax (4-4) with eight points.
The Indians host Selinsgrove on Monday, Jan. 6.
Mustangs fall
to Milton in final
MONTGOMERY - Midd-West knocked off host Montgomery 39-25 to earn a trip to the championship game of the Seventh Annual Dionna Satteson Memorial Tournament at Montgomery, but the Mustangs ran out of offense in the championship game against Milton.
Milton blitzed Midd-West 28-0 in the first quarter en route to a 52-18 victory on Saturday in the holiday tournament. Emma Wagner scored four of her 10 points in the second quarter for the Mustangs (1-7), who trailed 42-6 at the half.
Wagner added three points in the third as Midd-West trailed 46-9 and Lauren Nesbit had four of her six points in the fourth to set the final. Wagner was selected to the all-tournament team for the Mustangs.
Addison Wenzel scored a game-high 22 points for Milton (6-2), while Lainey Snyder and Hayden Snyder each added 10 points.
Midd-West was scheduled to host Mifflinburg today but school officials said Saturday that the game has been postponed. The Mustangs' next scheduled game is at Shikellamy on Friday.
Mount Union stung by
Hornets in consolation
HUNTINGDON - Mount Union went 0-2 at the Huntingdon Lions Tournament, held at Juniata College. On Friday, the Trojans (2-6) fell in their opener to Huntingdon 58-14 then lost to Juniata Valley 36-31 on Saturday in the consolation game.
The Hornets (4-6) led 12-11 after the first quarter and 20-15 at intermission. Mount Union rallied with a 6-5 run in the third quarter but the Hornets responded to outscore the Trojans 11-10 in the final period.
Mount Union hosts Southern Huntingdon on Friday, Jan. 9.
