HUNTINGDON -- Ben Umstead has played along the defensive line for Juniata College football over the past three seasons and he's ready to pass along some keys to playing in the trenches.
The senior lineman has played 17 games for the Eagles during his collegiate career and has learned that it's all about the small things.
"To become a solid defensive lineman, it all starts with the small details. Specifically, keeping your eyes on your job, using aggressive hands to make contact first and locking out, using your power by launching from your hips and good feet. Take pride in the little things as they are what can easily be controlled and have the biggest impact," Umstead noted.
The Midd-West product has said certain practices can be challenging.
"Pass rushing drills are always the most fun and oftentimes the most challenging. The cooperation of using your hands, legs and hips while trying to be accountable for your job can sometimes be hard, especially when learning new moves and skills," Umstead explained.
Umstead has 22 total tackles in his career. But, it's not easy playing in the Landmark Conference. Umstead added that one rival in particular has a tough offensive line.
"Susquehanna had some pretty good tackles on their team that were very technically sound," Umstead said.
Umstead prides himself in working hard and believing in the process. He's noticed a big difference in himself from Year 1 to Year 4.
"I pride myself in my work ethic and my ability to get my job done no matter what. I’ve battled injuries and that has made it hard mentally and physically, but when I am on the field, I make sure I am able to do what is expected of me. From freshman to senior year, I believe I am a completely different player. The biggest thing is trusting the process, this goes from technique being taught to trust everyone around you to do their jobs and to focus on my own. My preparation over the years also allowed me to now be able to go onto the field and just play ball as it feels like second nature," Umstead added.
Juniata College ends their football season on Saturday against Catholic, which is also their Senior Day.
