HUNTINGDON -- As a collegiate offensive lineman, you need to have toughness, smarts and an ability to work with at least four other players. Carter Sauer lives by those standards and more for Juniata College football.
"My favorite position to play in our offense is left guard. The ideal o-lineman to me is someone who is selfless and willing to do whatever needs to be done to do his job. Having pride in himself and his teammates to protect the quarterback and making it easier on the running back to see the running lanes," Sauer explained about being in the trenches.
The freshman o-lineman has played in 25 games for the Eagles with nine of those games coming this season.
"We have to understand where we want to run the ball and react to what the defense does in a split second, seeing that the opposition is only one yard away," Sauer voiced regarding responsibilities for him and his teammates.
How has Sauer's blocking technique changed over time, from his Midd-West High School days to Juniata College?
"Blocking has significantly changed for me. My time at Midd-West was short but it was mainly focused on blocking one man within the scheme. Here at Juniata I have to be focused on every single step to be able to block my guy the best way possible," Sauer noted.
When most football fans are enjoying Saturdays and Sundays watching games and rooting for their favorite teams, Sauer might be analyzing style of play.
"Yes, I do like how other players are able to block and communicate. Sometimes I may even try to replicate what I see on TV," the former Mustang said.
Juniata College is 2-7 entering their season finale against Catholic. The Eagles beat Keystone last week, 43-38.
