Mifflin County product earns All-MAC honors again
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - Kylee Cubbison has soared to become one of the top runners for the Bowling Green State University Falcons since she landed in Ohio three years ago.
The Mifflin County High School product has also proven to be one of the top runners in the Mid-American Conference last season when she earned second-team all-conference honors as a sophomore with an 11th-place showing at the MAC Cross Country Championships.
As a freshman, the talented Cubbison placed 24th at the MAC meet.
Back to compete at her third conference meet on Nov. 2, the junior just missed cracking the top 10, finishing 11th with a time of 20:52.5 on the 6K course at Ball State.
"She continues to get better as we’ve gone through the season,” Bowling Green head coach Lou Snelling said about Cubbison. “It’s so hard to be All-MAC in back-to-back years, because it’s so competitive. The fact she was able to do that I think really speaks to the position she’s in.”
The Falcons finished fourth in the 12-team MAC standings, behind four-time MAC champion Toledo. Ohio and Eastern Michigan rounded out the top three.
Cubbison opened the season with a seventh-place finish in 18:10.4 at Akron's Tommy Evans Invitational (5K) in Norton, Ohio, on Aug. 30. She followed that up with a fourth in 20:57 at Western Michigan's George Dales Invitational in Kalamazoo, Mich., on Sept. 20. Bowling Green also captured the team title.
On Oct. 5, Cubbison had sort of a homecoming as she came to Pennsylvania to run at the Paul Short Run (Gold Race) held at Lehigh University in Bethlehem. Cubbison ended up 24th in 20:40.9 and the Falcons placed 16th out of 42 teams.
Coffey, Sheaffer stand out for Juniata XC
HUNTINGDON - Mifflin County products CJ Coffey and Justice Sheaffer had strong outings for the Juniata College cross country team this fall.
A sophomore, Coffey opened the season with an eighth-place finish in 18:33.6 at the Westmoreland Community College Wolfpack Invitational in Youngwood, Westmoreland County, on Aug. 30. The junior followed that up with a third against Lycoming in the Juniata College Eagle Invitational held at Indian Valley Elementary Center in Reedsville on Sept. 13. Coffey finished in 20:29.6.
On Sept. 28, Coffey was the top finisher for Juniata at the Lock Haven Open, placing 22nd in 27:34.3. The Eagles finished 11th in the team standings.
On Oct. 5, at Pitt-Greensburg, Coffey placed 12th in 34:21.2. The Eagles won the quad meet over Potomac State, Pitt-Greensburg and LaRoche.
On Oct. 25, Coffey took 22nd in 28:38.9 at the Lebanon Valley College Last Chance Run Fast Invitational. Juniata took third in the team standings.
On Nov. 2, Coffey ran 64th in 28:25.31 at the Landmark Conference Championships, held at Elizabethtown College. The Eagles finished eighth out of nine teams.
Sheaffer, who is also a sophomore, finished 12th in 25:22.60 at the Westmoreland Community College Wolfpack Invitational on Aug. 30. The Eagles were second in the four-team field.
On Sept. 13, at the Juniata College Eagle Invitational, Sheaffer was 12th in 24:59.5. The Eagles were second out of three teams.
On Oct. 5, Sheaffer took 20th in 32:59.4 at Pitt-Greensburg. The Eagles were second in the five-team field. At the LVC Last Chance Run Fast Invite on Oct. 25, Sheaffer was 23rd in 29:08.3. Juniata did not field a team.
At the Landmark Championships on Nov. 2, Sheaffer ran 83rd in 27:24.7 as the Eagles took ninth in the 10-team field.
Walters wraps up hockey career for Eagles
HUNTINGDON - Kaylyn Walters (Juniata High School/Port Royal) wrapped up her field hockey career at Juniata College.
The senior forward/midfielder started all 17 games for the Eagles, scoring four goals to go with two assists this season. Juniata ended the year at 5-12, including 4-5 in the Landmark Conference. Her four goals tied for second on the team and they came on six shots on goal.
Walters opened the season with a bang, scoring a pair of goals in a 7-1 victory at Allegheny on Aug. 30. She converted a penalty stroke midway through the second quarter then found the back of the cage with 11 minutes to play for her second tally.
Walters notched assists in victories at Drew on Sept. 28 and at Goucher on Oct. 5. Both were wins for Juniata.
She scored Juniata's lone goal in a 2-1 loss at Lycoming on Oct. 15. In the ninth minute, Walters got to a ball that deflected off a Warrior’s foot and smashed it into the cage to put the Eagles up, 1-0.
Walters also scored in a 2-1 win over Elizabethtown. Midway through the second quarter, Juniata earned a penalty stroke that Walters calmly put into the right corner as the goalie dove the wrong way. That gave the Eagles a 1-0 lead at halftime.
Mummah completes first-year with Juniata soccer
HUNTINGDON - Haley Mummah (Juniata/Mifflintown) completed her first season with the Juniata College women's soccer team. As a defender-midfielder, Mummah played in four games for the Eagles, but didn't have any statistics. Juniata went 8-7-3 this year, including 2-6-1 in the Landmark Conference.
