PORT ROYAL -- Lance Dewease returned to Port Royal Speedway victory lane Saturday night after winning the 25-lap sprint car feature.
While it was his 123rd career Port Royal victory, it was his first driving the Shearer Motorsports No. 12. Dewease and his new team are racing more than planned in an effort to improve.
"You hate to waste good starting spots like I had last week," Dewease said. "Even tonight, I was ahead of the other good cars. I hated to waste that, but Logan (Wagner) was really good last week. We brought a new car out tonight, and it's a way different feeling car. I got through lapped cars better tonight."
"It's great; it's all about them," Dewease said. "We have to race more than we planned because we have to get better and the weather changed some plans. Everybody works hard on this thing. They all have regular jobs. I'm happy to get a win for them. I'm really happy with the new car tonight."
Mark Smith shot by Devin Adams off the top of turn two taking the lead on the opening lap. Dewease was up to third from his sixth starting spot. He drove by Adams in a close race off the second turn.
Smith led Dewease by about a second with five laps completed.
A nasty second turn wreck for Jake Karklin stopped the race with seven laps completed. Karklin had been running fifth. Mike Walter, along with top point men Chase Dietz and Logan Wagner were involved. All drivers were okay. Dietz and Wagner both made repairs and returned.
Dewease ducked under Smith entering turn three on the ensuing restart and grabbed the lead as they raced off turn four. Kody Lehman and Adams raced hard for third with Lehman getting the spot.
Adams and Lehman continued the battle for third. Adams got back by for a lap before Lehman returned the pass in turn three.
Lehman challenged Smith for second with seven laps to go. Mike Wagner and 2023 track champion Devon Borden were also in the mix as Dewease was on cruise control with a 2.5-second lead.
Lehman's second place finish was his best of the season.
"We've been working really hard on getting the car through the slick and through the middle and I think it's finally starting to pay off," Lehman said. "This is a family deal. It's awesome to click off some good runs."
Smith, Borden and Wagner completed the top five. Ryan Smith, Blane Heimbach, Adams, Gerard McIntyre Jr. and Dietz rounded out the top 10. Dietz also took over the championship points lead.
Heat races for the 23 sprint cars were won by Mike Wagner, Dietz and Lehman.
It was all Gregg Satterlee in the 35-lap Appalachian Mountain Late Model Speedweek race as he started on the pole and led every lap. For the driver from Indiana, Pa., his 20th career Port Royal win was worth $5,000.
"We had a really good car all night," Satterlee said. "We've been struggling here. Last week, we started seventh and ran 12th. These guys we race against here are so tough. If you're off just a little bit with your set-up, it's a struggle. We've been down that road a lot this season. We've been trying to make this car faster."
Satterlee led Hayes Mattern and Dylan Yoder in the early feature laps. Satterlee started lapping slower cars allowing Mattern to close the gap. Yoder also closed in the heavy traffic.
A caution slowed the race with 13 laps to go.
Satterlee controlled the restart as Yoder challenged Mattern for second. Ross Robinson was just behind that battle.
Another caution slowed the field again with 12 to go.
Once again, it was all Satterlee on the restart with Mattern in tow. Robinson and Yoder raced hard for the final podium spot.
Satterlee cruised to the win over Mattern, Robinson, Coleby Frye and Yoder. Matt Cosner, Gene Knaub, Jeff Rine, Rick Eckert and Kyle Hardy rounded out the top 10.
A large field of 45 cars were in the pits. Satterlee set quick time with a lap 19.001 in Group A and Drake Troutman was quickest in Group B at 19.213. Rine, Hardy, Robinson and Eckert won the heat races. Andrew Yoder and Bryan Bernheisel won the B-mains.
Brad McGinnis of Huntington dominated the 20-lap limited late model feature for his second straight win. Devin Hart, Trent Brenneman, Ryan Zook and Jaxton Garman completed the top five. Lane Snook, Danny Atherton, Brandon Bard, Frankie Gordon and Casey Steinhoff rounded out the top 10.
Brenneman, Zook and Hart won the limited late model heat races.
