BMS tops Great Commission
in ACAA quarters
BELLEVILLE -- Belleville Mennonite boys soccer will head to the ACAA semifinals after defeating Great Commission, 3-0, on Thursday.
In the first half, Belleville came out and even though they're defense stopped Great Commision, Belleville was only able to put up one point. Colton Sunderland sailed one into the back of the net for BMS during the first half.
"Hey, first half, there's a lot of nerves," Belleville head coach Michael Armstrong explained. "A lot of like, 'oh my goodness, this is a big game and we're super anxious' and, you know, we were just playing at an okay pace. And, and at halftime we just looked at them, and said, 'Hey, just take a deep breath, just relax. It's just like any other game and just start knocking a ball around.' And that's what we did. We just started knocking a ball around, took control of the game and, and they didn't really have an answer for us."
During the second half the team came out strong and had their heads in the game. Quinn Renno was able to put up the second point for BMS, and he also was an assist to Simon Drukenmiller as he scored the last goal.
"We're going to give some props to Simon, No. 20," added Armstrong. "He asked me a question. He said, 'Hey, what, what do you need me to do differently? So I'm more like a different player.' And I said, 'no, no, no. I want you the way that you are because you are scrappy, you work hard, you track back and you're willing to put yourself in positions that other people aren't just so you can maybe get a touch towards the goal.' And then he scored. And that's when I yelled at him, 'Hey, does that answer your question?' That's exactly what that was about."
Belleville Mennonite (9-3-1) plays in an ACAA semifinal game Friday at 4 p.m. against Centre County Christian.
"We've played them once in a scrimmage," Thunder's own Drew Miriello has to say about the semifinal matchup. "We're feeling confident as long as we come out ready to play tomorrow and not too antsy."
