MILROY - Reedsville took another step towards the 2023 Mifflin County Babe Ruth League championship on Tuesday night with a 12-2 victory over Strodes Mills.
Reedsville is now 15-1 as the league starts its third cycle. The top five teams will play each other these last two weeks and the bottom four teams will play each other as well.
The schedule for today is Strodes Mills (10-6) at Reedsville (15-1); Burnham (11-4) at Beaver Springs (12-4); Milroy (6-10) at McVeytown (6-10) and Belleville (1-15) at Lewistown (2-14). Belltown (8-7) has the night off. These games are an extension of the regular season.
Reedsville's Nate Parkes threw four scoreless innings as he helped Reedsville to a 10-0 lead after four innings.
Reedsville's speed at the top of the order, Carter Smith and Madden Weaver, helped push the league leaders to a 5-0 margin after the first two innings. Smith had a lead-off double and Weaver followed with a single. The speed of Smith and Weaver caused Strodes Mills to have three throwing errors. Gavin Powell had an RBI groundout and Camden Kauffman had an RBI single.
Reedsville scored five runs in the fourth and put the game away with two in the fifth. Strodes scored its only two runs in the fifth inning.
The winners finished with 11 hits. Powell had a big night with two hits, a double and a triple and he knocked in three runs. Weaver, Camden Kauffman and Nate Parkes each had two hits for Reedsville. Parkes had a two-run double in the fourth frame.
Strodes Mills finished with four hits. Ezra Beamer had a lead-off double in the fifth. Joel Beamer, Chase Moore and Jaxon Strohecker each had singles.
Beaver Springs 12,
Lewistown 5
BEAVER SPRINGS - Beaver Springs won its eighth game in a row and moved into second place with a 12-5 victory over Lewistown. Springs is now 12-4 and is a half game ahead of Burnham (11-4). The two teams play tonight.
Beaver Springs used the pitchers as Noah Wert got the start and his younger brother, Derek Wert finished the contest on the mound. Wyatt Shellenberger pitched the middle innings and got the win.
Springs had eight hits with Shellenberger getting two of them. Mason Fultz had the only extra-base hit for Beaver Springs, which was a double.
Lewistown led 5-3 going into the bottom of the fifth, but Beaver Springs scored eight times to take control of the game. Springs had five singles in the inning, three walks and a hit batter.
Lewistown's only multiple hitter was Bo Reeder with two.
McVeytown 18,
Belltown 9
BELLTOWN -- McVeytown scored in every inning, but one as it beat Belltown, 18-9. McVeytown has now won two of its last three games.
McVeytown had 13 hits with Carson Cherry leading the way with four. One of Cherry's hits was a two-run double in the fourth inning. Elliott Yetter just missed hitting for the cycle as he had a single, double and a triple. Gatlin Kauffman, a rookie, chipped in with two hits. Shane Moist and Cullen Busch each had doubles for McVeytown.
Belltown also had a big night offensively as it had 13 hits too. Easton Lepley had four hits with a double, while Reese Christine had two hits, including a two-run homer. Kyle Shirk and Tristin Pent each had two hits for Belltown. Cherry pitched into the fifth inning and Busch finished the win for McVeytown.
