BOWLING GREEN -- Former Mifflin County cross country and track and field athlete, Kylee Cubbison, continues to prosper as a Division I athlete at Bowling Green State University, yet that has not stopped her from giving back to the running community where it all started.
Cubbison was a dominant runner for the Huskies, racking up the accolades in her four years at Mifflin County. The McVeytown native was a three-time state qualifier in cross country and state medalist in the 1600- and 3200-meter runs in 2022. She just finished her freshman campaign in Bowling Green, Ohio, one which was filled with much success for the young Falcon.
"My first year of cross country and track at BGSU was very busy and an adjustment from high school...Every race I ran was filled with very talented athletes which helped to push me to do my best. Being on the cross country and track teams has helped make the transition to college easier. Having a team is like already having friends in place when you get there," Cubbison noted..
Cubbison ran her best time of the outdoor season at the perfect time during the MAC championships. She ran a personal best time of 4:26.88 to win the race. That time ranks as the fifth fastest time in school history.
"My favorite moment would have to be winning the 1500m run at the NCAA Division I Mid-American Conference outdoor track championships. It was a very exciting race that unfolded almost perfectly for me. After I crossed the finish line my team swarmed me and it was cool to experience the excitement of the moment," Cubbison said.
Earlier in the season, Cubbison ran her best ever 5K time of 16:51.28 at the Bryan Clay Invitational, placing fourth in the race.
During her time in Mifflin County, Cubbison can be found helping out the programs where it all started for her. Coaches Greg Loht and Neil Breneman were Cubbison's mentors and coaches during her time at Mifflin County and now she is learning from them while teaching what she knows to younger runners.
"As a volunteer I am there to help out and support the coaching staff and athletes. I am learning how to coach from Coach Loht and Coach Breneman from the Huskies, and Coach Sprecher from the Juniata Valley Striders," Cubbison explained.
Cubbison has already achieved so much in one season at Bowling Green State University, yet she has much more on her mind to accomplish. She aims to be an All-MAC athlete in all three seasons: cross country, indoor and outdoor track and field. For her none of that would be possible without the Juniata Striders and Mifflin County cross country and track programs, and most importantly the people involved.
"I want to give back to and support the coaches and athletes that helped me throughout my journey. I would not be where I am today without their support. I would like to show the youth in this area what you can accomplish through hard work, and hope that through my accomplishments I am able to inspire other people to try out running, cross country, or track and field," Cubbison said.
