WILLIAMSPORT -- Midd-West advanced its boys' 4×800 relay team and shot putter Miles Aurand to states after day one of the District 4 Class 2A Championships on Thursday in Williamsport.
The quartet of Anden Atkins, Wyatt Nelson, Connor Stoltzfus, and Ben Hummel ran the course in a time of 8:14.17, good enough for fourth place. The time met state qualifying standards for the Mustangs. Williamson was first, followed by Hughesville and Danville.
Aurand grabbed second place in the shot put with a throw of 48-05.25. Southern Columbia's Tyler Arnol won the event with a toss of 49-07.75. Arnol has been the top shot putter in the district all season and was the favorite coming into the competition.
Earning a medal was East Juniata's Kory Graham, who finished fifth in shot with a throw measuring 47-08.
East Juniata's Josef Book and Midd-West's Camryn Pyle advanced through the prelims and semifinals with strong performances.
Book placed second in the 110 hurdles with a time of 14.95, while Pyle finished third in the girls' 100 hurdles with a time of 15.80. Book and Pyle will look to earn berths to states with top two finishes in their final's races on Saturday.
After day one, Midd-West sits fourth in the boys' team standings with 13 points. Southern Columbia is first with 22 points, followed by Danville (18) and Central Columbia (15).
The championships continue on Saturday, starting at 9 a.m. Saturday's events include finals in all running events as well as the high jump, javelin, discus, triple jump, long jump, shot, and pole vault.
