The Mount Union Trojans faced off with back yard rival Southern Huntingdon on Friday night in Mount Union. The Rockets were up 39-34 at the end of the third quarter and the Trojans put together a big 22-point fourth quarter to win a 56-45 decision over the Rockets.
The Trojans stand at 3-2 on the season and the Rockets are also now 3-2 overall.
ìThe team is getting better each week,î commented Trojans head coach Anthony Sottasante. ìWe played a good game last week against a very good team that the score did not reflect. I am proud of how the team fell behind and did not give up coming back late for the win.î
In the first quarter the teams started to pound the run game with Nate Myers running the ball for the Rockets matched up against Bryce Danish under center and running the ball for the Trojans. The Rockets scored two touchdowns in the first quarter with Myers hitting Chase Gibbons at 9:30 for the first score on a 32-yard pass play and turned around at 4:50 adding the second with Myers hitting Owen Winter for a three-yard pass. Lance Carbaugh kicked the first extra point, and the Trojans blocked the second attempt. The Trojans got on the board at 2:32 left in the quarter when Danish ran it in from eight yards out and he also kicked the point after.
The teams continued to score in the second quarter Scoring on a four-yard run after the Rockets moved the ball down field. Myers scored the two-point conversion picking up a fumble and running it in. At 7:38 Danish found daylight and went 32-yards for a Trojan score on the next possession. Danish added the point after. On the kickoff after the Trojan score Myers ran the kick to the house 84-yards for a Rocket touchdown. The kick after failed. At 4:35 the Trojans answered when Danish again found a crack in the defense and broke loose for a 34-yard score. Danish added the point after. The Trojans were not finished. The Rockets punted and on the next drive Danish found Braylan Knable open hitting him for a 30-yard touchdown pass. Danish failed on the kick and the Trojans, and the Rockets went into the break all tied at 27-27.
The Rockets scored first in the third quarter at 7:17 when they got down to the one -yard line and Myers punched I in with a pass attempt for two points failed. It looked like the Trojans were in trouble because at 2:16 the Rockets drove to the one-yard line and Myers again punched it in failing again on a two-point pass play. At the two-minute mark on the clock Cainen Atherton rolled out on a halfback pass and hit Quartey Williams for a 50-yard pass play for a touchdown. Danish kicked the point after. The Trojans were down 39-34 going into the fourth quarter.
The Trojans scored their first touchdown at 6:21 in the quarter after a drive with Danish running it in from four yards out. Danish found Williams for a two-point pass play to put the Trojans in the lead. At 4:53 Danish picked off a Myers pass and took it 48-yards for a touchdown. Danish hit Atherton for the two-point pass play. The Rockets continued to fight and at 3:30 they scored after a drive with Myers running it in from four yards out. The kick after failed. The Trojans still fighting knowing not to allow Myers and the Rockets too much time on the clock scored again at 2:08. The Trojans pounded the ball down to the three-yard line and Danish ran it in for the last Trojan score. The kick failed and the clock ran out with the trojans winning 56-45.
ìIt was a fun game with all the scoring but not from this side,î commented Rockets head coach Aaron Batzel. ìWe matched up well against each other. We must learn to play against adversity better. I think we got somewhat frustrated late in the game.î
The Trojans are on the road at Everett and the Rockets host Bellwood-Antis.
