Juniata Christian pummels CMVT to move to 2-0

MCALISTERVILLE -- Juniata Christian used selfless soccer led by the trio of Peyton Burd, Annika Martin and Lydia Goodling and routed Columbia-Montour Vocational-Technical by the final score of 17-0 in non-league girls soccer action Monday afternoon.
"I think we played well. It's really hard to tell with a score line like this. The first two games have been pretty much the same but, we got a lot of playing time for the younger girls which is good too," Lions coach Todd Taylor said.
"I just told them it's a whole new ball game tomorrow night. We're going to be playing East Juniata, so we'll have to come with a completely different focus and different level of competition tomorrow night."
Throughout the game, the Lions had complete control of the tempo as well as possession of the ball as they held the ball on the Rams' side of the field for 95 percent of the game. Juniata Christian never allowed much room for the Rams to breath, having a total of 43 shots for the whole game.
The Lions scored a goal within the first 15 seconds of the match and the flood gates were wide open. They scored 10 goals in the first half out of 23 shot attempts.
Juniata Christian showcased great vision throughout the field as the Lions were focused on finding the open player before taking a shot at the net. The Lions had eight of the 10 goals scored in the first half came with an assist.
Then, the Lions added on seven more goals in the second half with five of those coming with assists. Erin Sheaffer led the Lions with four assists.
"I think they moved the ball pretty well. This is a very unselfish group," Taylor said.
"They don't really care who scores as long as somebody scores. That's what is important, they don't look at stats and I really appreciate that part of their game."
The trio of Martin, Burd and Goodling were fully on display throughout the game with all three getting three or more goals. Martin and Burd each led the Lions with five goals and had connected with one another on four separate occasions. Meanwhile, Goodling had four goals in the afternoon, including one that got an assist from her sister Melinda Goodling.
"They've been key all year. Lydia has been playing really well in the mid-field whether she scores or not, she has been providing assists and helping in our build up and then those two up top," Taylor said.
"This is their third year together. I'm looking forward to them playing against some good competition against East Juniata. It will be a good game tomorrow night."
Burd is chasing a milestone as she is close to 100 career goals. She came into the game with a total of 91 goals. After scoring five goals on Monday, she is up to 96 goals.
With this victory, Juniata Christian remains unbeaten in 2022 with a record of 2-0 and will travel to play against East Juniata at 7 p.m. today.
