MECHANICSBURG -- Lance Dewease and the Kreitz Racing Team weren't pleased with their performance during the World of Outlaws races this month at Williams Grove Speedway. This prompted the team to race Friday night at the Grove in hopes of getting faster.
They did just that as Dewease won the 25-lap sprint car feature. It was his first Grove win of the season and the 104th of his career. It was worth $5,000.
It wasn't easy though as a few different drivers kept the heat on Dewease throughout the main event, including Anthony Macri on a restart with two laps to go.
"I could run really hard for two laps on the bottom before the air pressure built back up in the tires," Dewease said. "We were pretty good on the bottom and I figured whoever was in second was running the top. I knew it was going to get better and I think it did. I hit two really good corners on that restart and I felt pretty comfortable that I didn't have to change my line after that."
Robbie Kendall and Dewease raced hard on the opening lap with Kendall leading. Dewease made an inside move on Kendall in turn four taking the lead on lap two.
The yellow flew with three laps completed when Brent Shearer and Justin Whittall both stopped on the frontstretch. Both restarted.
Dewease controlled the restart over Kendall, Dylan Norris and Devon Borden.
Norris tried to take second, but Kendall took his line away entering turn three. Borden passed Norris in turn four and then blasted under Kendall for second entering turn one. Kendall got sideways and collected Norris bringing out the yellow flag with four laps completed.
Dewease and Borden led the field now for the restart with Chase Dietz, Matt Campbell and Danny Dietrich following.
Borden tried hard to take the lead on the restart, but Dewease was too strong. Dietrich passed Campbell for fourth and went after Dietz. Anthony Macri, who started 17th, was up to sixth.
Dewease streaked away to a 3-second lead as Dietz and Dietrich closed on Borden.
With 11 laps completed, Dewease began lapping slower cars, but had increased his lead to 4-seconds.
Dietz took second and closed on Dewease as he was dealing with heavy traffic with 10 laps to go. The lead was down to 1.4-seconds.
"The longer we ran, the worse we got," Dewease said. "I was pretty free. We've been fighting tight with this new car. That's why we're here. We didn't like how the car was last week."
Dewease made a strong move by two slower cars to increase his lead again just as the yellow flag flew with seven laps to go.
Dietz kept pace with the leader following the restart. Macri challenged Dietrich for fourth spot. Dietz kept Dewease within striking distance.
Borden stopped on the backstretch with four laps to go.
Once again, Dewease controlled the restart as Macri took third from Dietrich. Dietz jumped the cushion and slowed in turn four with two laps left. The red flag replaced the yellow to allow teams to refuel.
"I picked up the pace on those restarts," Dewease said. "I could run a lot harder and drive across the corner instead of staying on the bottom and could get off the corner really good. I felt comfortable there that it was going to take a really good car to go by me on the top."
