LEWISTOWN -- It was a tough battle for an early season game in the Mifflin County Babe Ruth League.
On Sunday night, Strodes Mills pulled out a 4-3 win over McVeytown as it scored a run in the bottom of the seventh to gain the hard-fought victory.
With two outs, Evan Strohecker walked. The 14-year-old speedster didn't waste any time as he stole second and third. Grady Hoppel drew a walk and then Aidan Arnold was walked intentionally to load the bases.
The game ended with the next batter when Bryson Hughes reached on an error.
Strodes Mills scored first as it put up two runs in the third. Strohecker led off with a triple and Hoppel brought him home with sacrifice fly.
Arnold followed with a base hit. He stole second and third and later scored when Joel Beamer reached on an error.
McVeytown went a head, 3-2, with three runs in the fifth. Clay Ammon had the big hit as he smashed a two run single to tie the game. Nazae Traxler put McVeytown ahead as he scored on a wild pitch.
In bottom of the inning, Strodes tied the game as Strohecker walked stole second and third and scored on a sacrifice fly from Arnold.
Michael McNitt was the winning pitcher for Strodes as he went the last two innings in relief. Strohecker went the first five and Beamer and Hoppel worked the fifth.
McVeytown finished with three hits with Ammon getting two of the three. Zach Diehl had McVeytown's only other base hit, a single in the first.
Strodes finished with four hits. The other two came in the second as Beamer and McNitt each had singles.
The game was the first of the season for both teams.
Saturday
Beaver Springs West 16, Belleville 6
BELLEVILLE -- Three Beaver Springs West pitchers combined for 14 strikeouts as it beat Belleville, 16-6. The game ended after six innings due to the 10 run rule.
Cole Keister pitched the middle innings for the West and picked up the win.
Beaver Springs finished with six hits with Caden Walter and Alex Trojan each getting two. Braxton Smith had the game's only extra-base hit, a double.
Belleville finished with just four hits, all singles from Braden Peachey, Brett Zook, Jacob Ross and Noah Sharp.
It was the West's first win of the season.
Lewistown 10, Beaver Springs East 0
LEWISTOWN -- Lewistown won its second game of the young season with a 10-0 victory over Beaver Springs East, the newest team in the league.
The game was scoreless unitl the fourth when Lewistown batted nine men and scored five runs.
Jeremiah Partchey and Zane Gramley each had RBI singles in the big inning. The East committed three errors, walked one and had three wild pitches.
Lewistown added two more runs in the fifth and then Trevor Miles and Jaylen Bowersox each had base hits as Lewistown scored three more times.
Chase Hartung was the winning pitcher as he threw into the seventh. He struck out seven, walked two and gave up just two hits. Max Yoder got the final two outs for Lewistown.
The East had two hits, one each from Kyle Shupp and Landon Hartman.
Although the game was played in Lewistown, Beaver Springs East was the home team.
