Juniata harriers sweep TVL titles

DUNCANNON -- The Juniata cross country teams completed a sweep of Tri-Valley League competition at its annual championship meet on Wednesday afternoon, as Logan Strawser led all runners as the boys individual champion at Susquenita High School.

Strawser paced the boys with a time of 18:44, finishing 19 seconds ahead of second-place runner Michael Singley of Susquenita. Joey Bomberger placed third for the Indians with a time of 20:24, while Wyatt Stroup was seventh with a time of 21:23. Micah Fausey also scored a top 10 finish for the Juniata boys, finishing 10th with a time of 21:57.

Juniata won the boys competition 27-30 over Susquenita.

"I was extremely pleased with how every boy ran," Indians coach Jeff Miller said. "(Assistant coach) Shari (Miller) and I expressed how this was one of their most important races as a team before the meet. They all ran their hearts out and we can't be more pleased. Most of them dropped several minutes off of ther time when we raced here three weeks ago. I was happy to see Micah Fausey finish in the Top 10. He's been a little off this year with knee problems, but ran his heart out today for the team. To see freshman Joey Bomberger place third and Wyatt Stroup finish seventh is exciting for the future of Juniata cross country."

On the girls side, Jessie Bomberger paced the team with an eighth-place finish (27:40). Emily Houtz finished right behind her in ninth with a time of 27:50. Haley Mummah also cracked the top 10 with a time of 28:32. Elizabeth Gaisior and Peyton Sheaffer achieved top 20 finishes.

The championship was Juniata's second girls title in a row.

"It was exciting to see the girls put out another Tri-Valley League championship title," Miller said. "We couldn't have done it without the soccer players Jessie Bomberger and Haley Mummah. I'm very thankful their soccer coach allowed them to skip practice today to help out the cross country team. I was wowed by Jessie's performance today. She only runs part time and dropped over four minutes off of her time on this course from three weeks ago."

Juniata returns to competition on Oct. 12 when it takes on Newport at Little Buffalo State Park.

REEDSVILLE -- The Mifflin County cross country teams celebrated senior night and held its Meet the Huskies night, but ultimately fell to a tough Altoona team, as the girls fell, 24-31 and the boys lost, 22-33.

The girls team was led by Kylee Cubbison, who won the race with a time of 19:28, almost 20 seconds ahead of Altoona's Reese Wilbur. Addie Parsons finished in third place for Mifflin County with a time of 20:26.

"Kylie cruised to a first-place finish, feeling strong and ready, both physically and mentally for a big race this Saturday in Gettysburg," Huskies girls coach Neil Breneman said. "Addie proved how strong she is and learned what she is capable of knocking an entire minute off her season best. She is locking in on making another run for states."

Of the six runners for Mifflin County, Cubbison, Parson and Justice Sheaffer each achieved season bests. Sheaffer finished in eighth place with a time of 23:10, while Sarah Diehl was 11th with a time of 27:34.

"Tonight was all about gaining confidence in what they are capable of doing," Breneman said. "The team score may not show a win, but the confidence gained as we close in on the championship season was invaluable."

On the boys side, Mifflin County was led by Chris Royer, who finished fourth overall with a time of 17:10, while C.J. Coffey placed just behind him (17:47). Caden Bell (18:01), Cody Fultz (18:09) and Ben Hartzler (18:10) finished seventh through ninth for the Huskies.

"We ran against Altoona in the Big Valley Invitational and knew that we would have our hands full," Mifflin County boys coach Greg Loht said. "Luke Breneman, Max Laudermilch and Styers Oden all had season-best times. Despite the loss, most of the boys ran well. We actually closed the scoring gap from the BVI. We will meet Altoona in three weeks in districts. Hopefully we can turn things around by then."

Both Mifflin County teams will be back in action on Saturday at the Gettysburg Invitational.

Boys soccer

Midd-West 3,

MILL HALL -- The Midd-West boys soccer team received goals from Nicholas Eppley, Nolan Stahl and Gage Kuhns in a 3-0 win over Central Mountain in a Heartland Athletic Conference matchup on Wednesday night.

The Mustangs (11-1, 6-1 Heartland) scored twice in the first half and coasted on the way to the victory. The Mustangs held a 7-2 advantage in shots and a 7-0 edge in corners.

Midd-West hosts Warrior Run on Saturday.

SPRING RUN --The Mount Union boys soccer team couldn't recover from a slow start in a 7-0 loss to Fannett-Metal in an Inter-County Conference contest on Wednesday afternoon.

The Trojans couldn't produce much offensively, but goalkeeper Ryan Dountas recorded 19 saves in the second half, while Hunter Flagle saved three shots in the opening half.

Trojans' coach Jake Scott noted that the Trojans are still without multiple players due to contact tracing and injuries.

Mount Union hosts Northern Bedford today.

STATE COLLEGE -- The Mifflin County field hockey team fell behind and never recovered in a tough 1-0 loss to the Little Lions on Wednesday afternoon at Memorial Field.

The Huskies received 16 saves in goal from Sophie McCurdy, but were unable to score.

Mifflin County returns home on Friday against Carlisle and Saturday against Mifflinburg.

MIDDLEBURG -- The Midd-West field hockey team received goals from five different players, including two from Delaney Klingler on the way to a 6-0 rout of Warrior Run in a Heartland Athletic Conference contest at Sports Boosters Athletic Park in Middleburg.

Delaney Klingler, Abby Benner and Sarah Shupp each scored goals in the opening quarter -- Klingler's tally just 29 seconds into the game -- as the Mustangs never looked back.

Emily Kline and Marlo Spriggle also scored for the Mustangs.

Midd-West (6-5-1) hosts Central Columbia today in its annual benefit game.

COCOLAMUS -- The East Juniata High School field hockey team dropped a heartbreaking 3-2 decision in overtime on Wednesday afternoon in a non-conference game at East Juniata High School.

The Tigers received goals from Karah Goss and Ava Stoner, but ultimately lost in overtime. Stoner's goal with 6:20 left in regulation sent the game to an extra period.

East Juniata (1-13) hosts Newport today.

COCOLAMUS -- The East Juniata girls volleyball team fell in straight sets to Sugar Valley on Wednesday afternoon, losing by set scores of 22-25, 20-25 and 16-25.

The Tigers were led by Kylie Jewell, who had six digs and four aces on the night. Marissa Lauver led the Tigers with two kills.

East Juniata travels to Fannett-Metal on Saturday.
