What makes story of Gabby Petito different from others?

There are hundreds of thousands of people reported missing in the United States each year. Last year there were more than 540,000 reports filed with police. Sounds like a lot, but probably due to our COVID-19 isolation that was a record low number. Some of the missing were kidnapped; others were quickly found or voluntarily returned home; and there were those who simply wanted to disappear. Almost half of the missing are minorities, and most are under the age of 21. So, what is it about the missing person case of Gabby Petito, a white 22-year-old New Yorker who moved to Florida, that ...

The coming climate crisis in Scotland

“Follow the money!” The old maxim is always sound advice when assessing the motives of those advancing bold agendas for the benefit of mankind. Invariably, the newest progressive idea entails a transfer of wealth from the taxpaying classes of Western nations to our transnational, global and Third World elites. For the masters of the universe, establishing justice and equality for the world’s poor are rewarding exercises in every sense of the word. Consider the 2015 Paris climate accords. Biden stabbing nonunion workers in back

Nonunion workers make up nearly 90% of the U.S. workforce. President Joe Biden is stabbing them in the back. The massive $3.5 trillion budget bill Biden and Democratic lawmakers are trying to ram through Congress discriminates against nonunion workers and even forces some of them to pay higher taxes than union workers. Union membership in the U.S. has been declining for over 50 years. Biden is bent on reversing the trend, using the federal government to rig the system in favor of organizers and twist the arms of nonunion workers and employers. Biden said that unions “brung me to ...

Pushing voluntary servitude

Two weeks ago, President Joseph R. Biden announced his intention to order the Department of Labor to compel all employers of more than 100 persons to require all their employees to be vaccinated against COVID-19 or be fined $14,000 per day for each unvaccinated employee. The Department of Labor will collect the fines. Biden’s legal advisers probably informed him that the federal government is without authority to compel individuals directly to receive vaccinations, and if it were, the compulsion would need to come from Congress — which writes the laws — not from the president, ...

Clarence Thomas and the Declaration of Independence

Last week, Supreme Court Associate Justice Clarence Thomas arrived at the University of Notre Dame to speak about the Declaration of Independence. Speaking invitations like this that Thomas accepts are few and far between. Anyone who cares about our country and listens to this address will wish that he would agree to speak more. His presentation was a brilliant and profound articulation of what America is about at its core. It is what every American needs to hear in these troublesome and divisive times. Thomas tells his own story and how his life’s journey led him to ...

To honor a killer’s last request – or not?

A medium-rare rib-eye steak, a baked potato with butter and sour cream, an iceberg lettuce salad, garlic bread and lemon meringue pie for dessert. That was the last meal ordered up by serial killer Oscar Bolin right before the state of Florida executed him. It is customary in most states for death row inmates to ask for and receive a special last meal. Steak is a favorite request, as is Kentucky Fried Chicken and meat lovers pizza. Traditionally, the condemned also gets to choose a few close friends or relatives to be present at the moment they are put to death. Now one inmate’s ...
