Sunshine Act abuse should not be tolerated

Citizens should know what issues their school boards, borough councils and other government agencies plan to deliberate and/or vote on at public meetings. Call this commonsense requirement what it is: the law in Pennsylvania. Since 2021 the Sunshine Act, or state open-meetings law, requires that a government agency make its meeting agenda available at least 24 hours in advance of a public meeting. The agency must post the agenda on its publicly accessible internet website, if it has one, as well as at the agency office and at the location of the meeting. In addition, copies of the ...

Kids say the darndest things

There was a television show that ran from 1952-1970, hosted by Art Linkletter entitled Kids Say the Darndest Things. The premise was this. Art would ask the children on the show a question, often concerning a deep life topic, and they would reply in a way only an innocent child could, with simplistic honesty, which resulted most times in humor. As a mother to four children, two of them twins, and nana to seven grandchildren, all ages five and under, I can attest to the fact that children most certainly have an interesting and humorous view on life. I thought it might be entertaining to ...

Recognizing Juneteenth’s importance

It is customary to publish an editorial about a holiday on the holiday itself. However, today’s observance of Juneteenth National Independence Day is a worthy exception, partly because of the newness of the observance and, partly, because millions of Americans still lack an understanding of the holiday’s significance. Hopefully, this weekend, many of those millions will come to appreciate what the holiday is all about and that, for many Americans, it is about more than having a day off from work or, otherwise, a break from other responsibilities or routines. For the benefit of ...

Socialism versus nature argument still going

“Greed of the fossil fuel industry” is “destroying our planet,” says Sen. Bernie Sanders. Young people agree. Their solution? Socialism. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez says socialism creates “an environment that provides for “all” people, not just the privileged few.” “Nonsense,” says Tom Palmer of the Atlas Network in my new video. Palmer, unlike Ocasio-Cortez and most of us, spent lots of time in socialist countries. He once smuggled books into the Soviet Union. What he’s seen convinces him that environmental-movement socialists are wrong about what’s ...

Politicians made deal to create debt disaster

Democratic President Joe Biden and Republican House Speaker Kevin McCarthy - both of whom are career politicians — made a deal this week. They agreed to let the federal debt increase without any limit whatsoever until Jan. 1, 2025. For career politicians that date has special significance: It is after the 2024 elections, but before whomever wins those elections takes office. It is a date designed to minimize debate over the debt in the days leading up to the election. Republican Rep. Michael Cloud of Texas spoke to this point at a press conference the House Freedom Caucus held on ...

Kids don’t need exceptions just fortitude

My son has been pouting about a life jacket for two days. Summer has begun and so has day camp at the YMCA. My son wanted to attend this summer camp knowing that he’d get to swim every day. He’s been taking swim lessons since last fall and has mastered skills like floating on his back and picking up toys at the bottom of the pool in the shallow end. But he’s still working on treading water and swimming strokes. His form needs work. So, when the time came for summer camp, I wasn’t surprised when he didn’t pass the swim test. Hence the required life vest. He’s beyond ...
