A mother’s love is like nothing else

My daughter Joy messaged me last week to ask me what I wanted for Mother’s Day. Unsure if she meant from herself or from all four of my offspring, I replied with, “Well, what’s my budget?” Her tongue-in-cheek response was one million dollars. You have to know my daughter to appreciate her dry humor. My quick reply was, “Great, finally mothers are getting what they deserve!” Of course, I wasn’t serious, but then again, after birthing and raising four of them, two of which were twins, perhaps I was. Mother’s Day as an official holiday began in 1914 when President Woodrow ...

Welcome to Pie 101 in Bev’s Kitchen

Hello from the kitchen! Who doesn’t like pie? My dad’s favorite was the Montgomery pie. I was doing some research on the history of pies and apparently its roots stem from ancient Egypt and Greece. History says the pies were filled with savory things like meats and vegetables. Apparently fruit pies came later. Quiche is an excellent pie for a nice Sunday brunch. I’m sharing some pie making pics to show you that making crusts is not difficult. For me, it’s relaxing. So what would you make if you had an empty crust or two? Strawberry, apple, raspberry, lemon, quiche, Montgomery, ...

Early history of the Mifflin Co. Library

Several months ago, I was given two books of the board meeting minutes of the library; one dated 1896-1906 and the other dated 1906- 1941. Was I thrilled? You better believe it. We have “lost years” in our library history, from 1895 to 1940. This is what I know for sure: the city of Lewistown had the Apprentice Literary Society which formed in 1842 as well as a public library. The library had a hard time getting itself established. It moved around. In 1869 it was housed at 148 E. Market St., then moved into 13 E. Third St. with the Apprentice Literary Society, also known as ...

You can also read our past meeting minutes and agendas on our website, ...

Jesus is the cornerstone of our faith

Acts 4:1-22 Rejection hurts, doesn’t it, whether it comes from the one we love, a classmate or a co-worker. Even best-selling authors know the feeling of rejection. Ken Taylor’s paraphrase of the Bible, The Living Bible was rejected 63 times. He finally self-published it. Quite unexpectedly, The Living Bible became one of the biggest bestsellers of all time. The Diary of Anne Frank was rejected 15 times. One publisher called it “very dull.” Chicken Soup for the Soul by Jack Canfield and Mark Victor Hansen was rejected 140 times. And yet they turned it into a series of ...

Jesus gives the power to stand strong

Good morning, sisters. Spring has sprung. And with it comes so many hopes and dreams. The season of new life sounds promising, and so does new life for our souls. Let’s talk. We’ve been sharing about addictions. No matter what yours is, it needs to go, because it’s controlling you, isn’t it? It could be that big one some of us struggle with...food. But it could be the giant of hard drugs and alcohol. Whatever, we feel hopeless to change it, and that’s because we haven’t gotten down to the core of the problem. It almost always stems from an inadequate feeling. We don’t ...
