Events for grown-ups at MCL

3 min read

The library's summer reading program is coming to a close. Here are a few things going on for grown-ups if you are looking for things to do.

Before July ends, please come into the Mifflin County Library in Lewistown and see the wonderful patriotic artwork our patrons made. We call it our favorite American Art collage.

Eleven artists and library users participated. They each were given a small canvas to work on. The canvases are on display and people are encouraged to come and view the artwork but also vote on the artwork with spare change. This is also a small fundraiser for the library. People can drop in coins and the winner will earn a prize.

In the display you will find a drawing of the Statue of Liberty. There is also a beautiful painting of Monument Square with the old historic courthouse in the background. You will see a collage of Mifflin County with a tractor, a photo of one of the Wild Goose sculptures and an Amish buggy. Another artist included a photo of Yellowstone National Park.

There is still time to fill out a book log for the adult summer reading program. The book logs must be handed in by Aug. 8. If you hand in your book log, your name will then go in for a chance to win a prize. Participating in the summer reading program is always a lot of fun, especially if you love to read. If you merely "like" to read, it's a great motivator.

Another activity for July that I'd like to point out is the Creative Minds Night. Creative Nights is a meet and greet for local or upcoming authors. The next Creative Minds Night is July 28 at 5:30 p.m. Local author Carrie Jacobs will be at MCL in Lewistown, talking about her writing journey. Carrie has also written quite a few books, including two series: Hickory Hollow Series and WIllow Creek Series.

Carrie lives in Central Pennsylvania and if you want to know more, she is available on Facebook and Instagram. According to her webpage, her books are like Hallmark movies: sweet, not too spicy romantic comedies set in small town USA.

One last activity I encourage everyone to participate in is the Postcards to the Future, sponsored by America 250 Mifflin County and the Juniata River Valley Visitors Bureau. There are postcards at the library (at MCL in Lewistown as well as Kish Library in Belleville) that, when returned, will be placed in the time capsule underneath the Liberty Bell at the courthouse. Submissions can be returned to the library by Dec. 31 in the morning but why wait? Come in and pick up a postcard and write something or attach a photo or a drawing for the future us to read in 2051.

A group of our Children's Library friends took postcards and then returned them. Before they placed them in the mailbox for the future, they read them to me or I read them for them. The children were ages six and under and all were similar and something like this, "Hi, my name is... and when you read this I will be 27 (or 31, etc.) years old." It was so cute. The children laughed about how old they would be.

Hope to see you at the library soon.
