Our most recent Chamber of Commerce Business After Hours event was hosted by the legendary Port Royal Speedway, lovingly known as “The Speed Palace,” along with the Juniata County Fair (The Juniata County Agricultural Society). From the moment guests arrived, it was clear the organizers had gone above and beyond to create an unforgettable evening filled with history, community pride, and experiences many of us will long remember.

Nearly 60 chamber members attended and were treated to a behind-the-scenes look at one of our region’s most treasured destinations. Guests enjoyed history lessons, guided bus tours, sprint car and late model displays, personal interviews with drivers, and opportunities to interact with track officials, fair board members, and staff. Attendees explored recent upgrades to the facility, including the grandstand improvements, walked through the tunnel to the infield, and experienced a guided riding tour around the expansive grounds.

Several moments throughout the evening left me feeling deeply nostalgic and emotional. One came during the bus tour when I looked up and saw the many advertising banners lining the track, so many representing chamber member businesses and organizations. I felt an overwhelming sense of pride realizing these local businesses recognize the importance and impact of this nationally known track and continue to invest in something that means so much to our community.

Another especially moving moment came while walking through the recently constructed tunnel leading to the infield. I was told the story behind why this project became such a priority. The tunnel was built to ensure the excitement and experience of race day could be accessible to everyone. Before its construction, there was one devoted race fan whose loyal friends would physically carry both him and his wheelchair up and down the stairs so he could continue watching the races he loved from the infield. On dedication day for the tunnel, that gentleman and his faithful friends became the true heroes of the celebration. To me, that story perfectly captures the heart of our community, neighbors caring for neighbors with compassion, loyalty, and kindness. It was a beautiful example of humanity at its best, and one that impacted me deeply.

Standing in the infield itself felt almost surreal, as though I were standing on hallowed ground. I found myself thinking about the countless generations of race fans who had stood in that very spot before me. I could almost hear the thunderous roar of the engines echoing through the speedway, smell the fuel lingering in the air, and feel the grit rising from the dirt track as the cars banked hard around the turns.

Another wave of nostalgia came as I remembered my father, who was born and raised in Juniata County, sharing stories about how he never missed a race day at Port Royal. My mother would laugh and add that when they were dating, if she happened to be running late on a Saturday evening, she immediately knew she was about to experience her own version of dirt track racing as my father hurried down the road determined not to miss the waving of the green flag.

I learned that the speedway itself dates back to 1938 and has evolved tremendously over the decades, becoming the premier racing destination that it is today and attracting drivers, even NASCAR drivers, and fans from across the country, and even around the world. Yet despite all the growth and modernization, the spirit of the place remains deeply rooted in tradition, family, and community.

One of the highlights of the evening was hearing directly from the race car drivers themselves, some of which were surprisingly young. Their passion for the sport was unmistakable and listening to their stories about race day preparation, the adrenaline of competition, the sacrifices involved, and the close-knit racing community offered all of us a fascinating glimpse into a world many of us know little about. Guests had the opportunity to ask questions, hear firsthand perspectives, and gain a deeper appreciation for the dedication, skill, and heart that fuel this sport. It transformed the evening from simply a networking event into a truly meaningful experience.

From the drop of the green flag to the waving of the checkered finish, Port Royal Speedway has become far more than a racetrack. It is a local tradition, a gathering place, and a source of pride woven into the fabric of our region. For generations, families and friends have gathered there to share in the sacred ritual of dirt track racing, creating memories that travel through generations. After spending an evening immersed in its history, stories, and people, it is easy to understand why “The Speed Palace” holds such a special place in the hearts of so many.
