Sowing and reaping: God’s way of blessing
When most people hear the phrase “sowing and reaping,” they often think first about money. It is true that the Bible teaches principles of giving, generosity, and financial blessing. But sowing and reaping reaches much farther than money. It touches every area of life.
The apostle John wrote, “Beloved, I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper and be in health, even as thy soul prospereth” (3 John 2). That is not just one man wishing another man well. That is the Word of God showing us the heart of God.
God wants good things for His people. He is not the author of trouble, confusion, sickness, lack, or destruction. James 1:17 says, “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above.” God is a good Father. He wants His children to walk in His blessing.
But notice what John said: “even as thy soul prospereth.” Many people want their circumstances to change, but they have never allowed the Word of God to change the way they think. Soul prosperity begins when we start thinking in line with God’s Word. We must learn that God is good, His Word is true, and His ways are best.
Galatians 6:7 gives us one of the clearest statements in the Bible about this principle: “Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.” That word “whatsoever” is important. This principle is not limited to money. We sow words. We sow attitudes. We sow obedience. We sow kindness. We sow faithfulness. We sow forgiveness. We sow prayer. We sow time in the Word of God. And sooner or later, a harvest comes.
If a person sows to the flesh, he will reap corruption. But if he sows to the Spirit, he will reap life everlasting. That means the choices we make today are preparing the harvest we will meet tomorrow.
Sometimes people want a harvest without planting the right seed. They want peace but keep sowing strife. They want strong families but sow neglect. They want spiritual strength but never make time for the Bible, prayer, or church. They want friendship but sow selfishness. They want mercy but refuse to forgive.
The Bible says, “Let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not” (Galatians 6:9). That tells us something important. The harvest does not always come immediately. God’s payday does not always come on Friday afternoon. But if we keep doing the right thing, if we keep walking in love, if we keep obeying God, if we keep sowing to the Spirit, the harvest will come.
There may be times when it seems easier to quit doing right. Maybe you have been kind to someone, and they have not been kind in return. Maybe you have tried to walk in love, and someone still treated you unfairly. Maybe you have given, prayed, served, and helped, and you wonder whether it has made any difference.
Do not grow weary. God sees. God knows. And God is faithful.
Jesus taught us to go the extra mile. He said to love our enemies, bless them that curse us, do good to them that hate us, and pray for those who despitefully use us and persecute us. That is not always easy. In fact, sometimes it is very hard. But when we do that, we are sowing to the Spirit. We are acting like children of our Father in heaven.
The world says, “Get even.” Jesus says, “Walk in love.” The flesh says, “Hold a grudge.” The Spirit says, “Forgive.” The world says, “Take care of yourself first.” The Word says, “Give, and it shall be given unto you.”
This is why every person needs Jesus Christ. We cannot live this life in our own strength. We need a new heart. We need forgiveness. We need the grace of God. We need to be born again.
Jesus died for our sins and rose again from the dead. He offers eternal life to all who will call upon Him. Romans 10:13 says, “For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”
The greatest seed you can sow is the surrender of your life to Jesus Christ. Give Him your heart. Call upon His Name. Receive Him as Lord and Saviour. Then begin to sow to the Spirit. Read the Bible. Pray. Walk in love. Be faithful. Be generous. Do the right thing even when it is hard.
You may not see every harvest today. But do not be deceived. God is not mocked. Whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.
Sow to the Spirit, and God will bring the increase.
