My thoughts are still gravitating to Florida this morning, and our recent trip there. There's a vision in my head that won't go away, so, here I am, gotta get this one off my chest today. My husband and I were sitting around a table in an outside restaurant, waiting on our food, and taking in the view. All at once, the 'view' came into sight, and what a sight it was. Four girls came strolling by on roller skates, and while I had to do a double take to see if they truly had no clothes on, there was no doubt when they passed by. These four girls had 'g strings' on, or barely on. Four bare, completely bare butts, calmly skating down the street for all to see. I guess that's the idea. I must be getting old. This time, though, instead of feeling disdain, my heart broke. I thought of the emptiness that must be in their hearts to need that kind of attention. I thought of the danger they put themselves in by not covering at least their private parts. I thought of the life they must have lived to not realize how wrong this was…and then I thought about how I, as a Christian, am to be salt to others.
Matthew 5:13 says: You are the salt of the earth. but if the salt should lose its taste, how can it be made salty? It's no longer good for anything but to be thrown out and trampled on by man.
God calls us, as Christians, to be salt…to be preserving agents for a world that is corrupted and degenerating because of sin. We are here in this life, in this place, for this time, to be used by God to preserve what is good and right. The presence of Jesus in our lives makes all that He is, available to others. As we hold out Jesus to a lost soul, he or she can find His Salvation. That Salvation can mend a broken home, comfort a grieving heart, restore a wayward child, heal the pain of the past…and that hope that we hold out is not in us, it is in Jesus.
If, however, we ourselves are not in a right relationship with God, we cannot be agents through which God's love flows. We cannot be salt. The Bible says, at this point, we will be good for nothing. Wow! I sure don't want to be good for nothing. Do you?
I believe the challenge is in this: Are the ones we are involved with better off spiritually than before we were involved with them? In other words, does our presence make any difference at all in their lives, spiritually? Yes, I know, everyone has to decide for themselves what they will do with Jesus, but do we make an impact on others for Jesus…do they see Jesus in us? Or…do they only feel condemnation from us? Lord, help us all…to be salt so that we can be used of You to preserve others in this very crazy, mixed up world we live in today.
