I'm taking a little break in writing about Library History to write about our changes. Library renovations are big on my mind. Well, on the minds of all of the staff as well as the board. And probably for more people than that.
The lower level of the library may be closed but the Children's Library is still available. It is now on the upper level where non-fiction is. This is temporary and when we are finished, Mifflin County Library will have a new Children's Library for our patrons and small friends. Children are welcome to come and look for books and, yes, they are welcome to be children and noisy. It's ok, we love to hear their little voices. There are a few toys to play with. While this is a change, it's not permanent and will be well worth this minor inconvenience. I think I'll start making a tally mark every time a child asks, "Aren't renovations over yet?" Renovation is a big word to learn when you are only four years old. We are planning to add a new entrance to the Children's Library, as well as a second bathroom on the lower level. A second bathroom is greatly needed.
Because changes will be made in the lower level, we've had to come up with new plans for fingerprinting. Mifflin County Library still offers FBI fingerprinting for clearances for employment. Yes, the librarians offer this. If you need FBI clearances for employment, you have to make an appointment at www.identogo.com. There, you type in your information (name, address, email, employer, etc). Then you choose where you want to be printed. If you type 17044 into the block, the address in Lewistown pops up. It used to be 123 North Wayne St. It never gave the name of the business.
I can't tell you how many people would say, "I can't believe I do this at the library. I thought I would go to the courthouse." Well, we are now located in the Mifflin County Courthouse while our renovations continue. Fingerprint services at the courthouse began on Monday Jan. 22. I'm so thankful for the commissioners' help to keep the fingerprint service available for the residents of Mifflin County. The address at the courthouse, 20 North Wayne St., is the address you will see now.
I hope these changes don't confuse the community too much. There are a few other changes at the library. Kasey, one of our library clerks, has resigned and I wish her the very best. And Miss K, our children's programmer, has resigned after seven years of wonderful service to children. The children's programmer visited headstarts and preschools, she helped with community outreach events for children as well as offering story times inside the library and at Kish Library. She was a big part of library service and will be greatly missed. We ask families to bear with us while we plan for future story times.
