Good morning, friends. This morning, let's have some baby talk.
Luke 1:69,70 tells us: "…and has raised up a horn of salvation for us in the house of his servant David, as he spoke by the mouth of his holy prophets from of old."
Zechariah's song, a Christmas song. When he was prophesied about the "horn of salvation" that God has "raised up," he was declaring what this little baby in the manger was coming into the world to do…to deal with and defeat our enemies! Just as David said many years earlier, "The Lord is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer, my God, my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold and my refuge, my savior." (2 Samuel 22:2,3)…We can still say the same! Praise God for His mighty Salvation! And yet, salvation means more to us than saving us from our enemies; it is the saving of our souls from the sins that want to entangle us and keep us from God. We're talking about our eternal salvation…our home in heaven with Jesus one day.
On December 13th, five years ago, our precious infant granddaughter left this earth to be safely held in the arms of Jesus. Now friends, yes, yes, my heart is always heavy on this day, as I remember that very tragic day. Yes, my arms ache to hold this child once more. Yes, I often wonder what she would look like by now, what her voice would sound like, what her personality would be. And yes, I long to hear her call me "grandma"…but God had a different plan for her little life, and this is the place where our faith really can shine through. Yes, I ache for little McKena, but my faith in God, the horn of my salvation, was never stronger than the day she left us. I believed from that day on that God is powerful, all-knowing, always loving, and that I could trust Him with our granddaughter. I believed His plan had to be so much better for her than what I would have wanted for her. The "horn of salvation" can be trusted. He defeats our enemies, and I firmly believe that there was an "enemy" present in our little granddaughter's situation. Now, she is safe in the arms of Jesus, where nothing can ever harm her. I know for certain that without my faith in God, this tragedy could not have been seen as a triumph by me. I can rest, though I will always feel a void for the place she held in our family, I can rest, knowing that Jesus, who came as a baby, to save us from our sins, is holding our darling in His arms, and maybe even telling her about her family she will one day with reunited with.
So, as we continue to celebrate this life-changing event in the course of history, this Jesus…let's be so thankful that to each of us, He is our "horn of salvation", whereby we can have freedom from our enemies, and let peace abound.
This article was written five years ago. As we carry on through our days without that precious little girl in our midst, we have peace that comes only through trusting that Jesus is still in control. He is a present reality for our granddaughter, while we continue to look forward to being together again one day. Jesus remains, the horn of our salvation.
Over the coming days, as we anticipate Christmas morning and the culmination of the celebration of the birth of Christ, I pray that you, too, know Jesus as Lord and not simply baby Jesus.
Thank You , Lord Jesus, that You love us so very much…too much to let us have our own way at times. Help us to know the depths of that love this morning, as we reflect on all that is ours, because You came. We love You, Lord. In Jesus' name, I pray. Amen.
