Last time, I gave you a list of 12 ways you can save money with a free Juniata County Library card. I had to cut that list short because I was going to run out of column space! Today, I give you the rest of the list: another 12 ways you can save money with a free Juniata County Library card:
1. Let us get you a book from another library: if we are unable to purchase a book for our collection, we can look to borrow it from another library. You can submit requests in person or on our website.
2. Borrow print and digital reference books: we still have reference books in print, but many more are now available for you to read online for free at any time. The online format makes it easier for us to continue to get the latest editions.
3. Borrow audio books: do you enjoy listening to books? Borrow books on CD from the library for your next family road trip or just to play around the house. You can also get eAudio books on your smart device.
4. Fill a bag at our book sale for $5: our Friends of the Library hold book sales throughout the year and for just $5 you can fill a bag full of books, magazines, DVDs, music CDs, books on CD and puzzles. Their next sale is the week of Oct. 17. Visit our website for all the details.
5. Youth programs: brought to you by the United Way of Mifflin-Juniata, you and your little ones can attend story times, math and book clubs, and more throughout the year!
6. Youth play space: speaking of your little ones, we have a great play place area in our Children's room. It includes lots of toys as well as a new touch screen computer that gives your little ones educational games to play. Plus, there is a comfy chair for you the adult to sit in while you watch your little ones have a blast!
7. Borrow a Chromebook: need a full computer screen to view something online? Borrow from the library a free Chromebook. A Chromebook is an easy-to-use laptop that is perfect for accessing content such as websites or documents that are too big to view on a small phone screen.
8. One-on-one tech help: did you get a new phone, computer, camera or some other tech gadget and are unsure how it works? Or do you want to learn more about how to use your current device? Contact the library and ask for Vince to make a free one-on-one appointment so that you can get familiar with your device. Feel free to donate to the library what you feel the time was worth to you! We plan on holding classes this fall on how to use Microsoft Word and iPhones. Stay tuned for dates and times.
9. Scan a document: we can scan your documents and save them to a USB drive or send them as an attachment to an email address. Both options are free.
10. Book club kits: want to start up a book club? We lend out book club kits that include a bag of several copies of a single book. Visit our website to see a list of all the book club kits we carry.
11. Laminating: need to laminate some pages? We do that for $1 per page!
12. Disc cleaning: do you have some CD or DVD discs that are scratched and not playing properly? We can clean them for $1 per disc. Note: we can't guarantee that they will play like normal but we will do our best.
Book of the week
If you are going to read one book, give this one a try:
Heat 2 by Michael Mann and Meg Gardiner (released August 9th 2022)
(New adult fiction, thriller, crime novel, movie tie-in)
One of my all-time favorite movies is Heat, which came out in 1995 and has a star-studded cast that includes Al Pacino, Robert De Niro, Val Kilmer, Jon Voight, Ashley Judd and more.
Like Batman and the Joker in The Dark Knight (2008), Heat presents to the viewer an unstoppable force meeting an unmovable object: LA police detective Vincent Hanna (Pacino) tracking high-level thief Neil McCauley (De Niro) and his crew.
There has been on-again off-again talk for years about Mann putting out a movie, TV show, and or book that would serve as a prequel, providing readers background on the characters. After all these years, we are finally given a book (Mann's first crime novel) that illuminates what happened before (and after) the iconic film.
Some background: The men in the movie Heat are addicted to their lives. There is a scene where the thieves essentially have all the money they need. They can retire. McCauley even has a place picked out in New Zealand.
But another job presents itself, and they cannot resist it: "It's the juice. It's the action," states one of the thieves in McCauley's crew. The movie opens with a complicated armored car robbery involving stolen semis and tow trucks. It continues with a meticulously conceived bank robbery. McCauley is the mastermind. Hanna is the guy assigned to guess his next move.
In Heat 2, the reader learns how McCauley ended up leading a heist crew as well as how Hanna became such a focused cop. Heat 2 takes the reader through the 7 years leading up to Heat and introduces a new cast that molded what is shown in the movie.
The opening of Heat 2 provides the reader details of Heat, so having watched the movie is not required. However, the reader will definitely want to see (or re-watch) the movie afterwards.
Final verdict: I can't wait to read this book and watch the movie again!
