Memorial Day weekend traditionally marks an important holiday that often brings with it a renewed sense of hope, pride in our country, and determination for the future.
While many of us think of this weekend as the traditional kickoff to summer as we enjoy family, friends, and a burger or dog on the grill, this is in reality a time set aside for us to solemnly remember the men and women in uniform who have died in the service to our country.
Abraham Lincoln said in the Gettysburg Address that those who lose their lives in service to their country give "the last full measure of devotion."
Centre County is said to be the home of Memorial Day and I think that shows how seriously our community has always taken the need to remember those who devoted themselves so fully to our country, to our freedom, and to the sacred liberty we all hold so dear.
This weekend is also time to remember those servicemembers who went missing and have never been found, whose families remain wondering what happened to them. 1,700 in Vietnam; 7,000 in Korea; and 73,000 from World War II fought for our country and remain unaccounted for.
We honor them and we do not forget their sacrifice.
This is also a time to reflect on why we should also celebrate something a little different this Memorial Day.
For many of us, this Memorial Day signifies a distinct return to normalcy as we continue to emerge from the COVID-19 pandemic.
As we reflect on the events of the past 15 months, we must also remember and memorialize the work of our doctors, nurses, first responders, and other front-line personnel who have given their all to keep us safe and healthy during this trying time.
As we look forward to spending time with our family and friends, I encourage you to support our country in honor of those who did offer that last full measure of devotion: Fly the flag, sing the national anthem, and please join me in praying for our country and our Commonwealth.
