Remembering Steve Knudson: Success in multiple uniforms
To the Editor:
In the recent past couple of weeks, Lewistown lost a prominent, honorable public servant in Mr. Steve Knudson. He served for many years in a police uniform. I just wanted to let the public know that when he was a young man, he was very successful in another uniform. Because of the restructuring of the Mifflin County School District, much of the past athletic history is almost totally forgotten.
Steve was the starting catcher on both the 1970 Lewistown High School and the 1971 Penn Highlands High School baseball teams. Those two teams were the District 6 Champions in those respective years. At that time, District Championships were the ultimate goal for high school baseball teams.
Steve was an important part of the run production on those teams, but an even more important part of their defense. His catching fundamentals and his ability to understand hitters’ inabilities and his pitchers’ potentials had a direct parallel to those two teams’ successes.
The capabilities that he displayed in that baseball uniform carried over into his next uniform, which he wore as a Lewistown Police officer and public servant.
As one of Steve’s teammates on those teams, I thought it would be admirable to inform the Lewistown public.
Rest in peace, my fellow teammate and honorable Lewistown Public Servant.
