Humble yourself and turn to God

To the Editor:

Pride is excessive self esteem with an unreasonable self flattering opinion of one’s own superiority in self accomplishments or knowledge. It is many times accompanied by haughtiness which is having a high opinion of one’s self, with contempt for others. Becoming arrogant and conceited in dealing with others.

Being proud or prideful breeds contention, brings destruction, and stirs up strife (Prov. 13:10, 16:18, 28:25). Pride causes people to turn away from God (Hos. 7:10). Having a “proud look” is listed as one of the things God hates and is an abomination to Him. (Prov. 6:16). I find in Psalms 119:21 that God has “rebuked the proud” who are accursed for they do not obey His commandments. Being proud and arrogant is of the world and against God (1 John 2:16). Being proud shows contempt for God because they seek not wisdom from Him for they see themselves wise in their own eyes and they become conceited.

I find in 1 Peter 5:5 that we are able to be “clothed with humility: for God resisteth the proud and gives grace to the humble.” James 4:10 tells us to “humble ourselves in the sight of the Lord, and He will lift us up.” In Psalms 34:18 I find “the Lord is nigh unto us and changes our hearts and gives us faith by His grace to trust in Him we need to humble ourselves, turn to Him, and forsake the pride and arrogance of the world.

Which poison will you choose?

To the Editor:

He was the father of two children, and he was only 37 years old when he died from an illegal drug overdose. The drug dealer was never identified or punished and thus lives to kill again. Incidentally, the dead man was started on illegal drug use by HIS father, a drug dealer.

He was the father of six children, and he was 57 years old when he died from a heart attack caused by cigarette smoking. When his family encouraged him to quit after he suffered a heart attack at age 48, he said, “I can’t.” He was just one of many World War II veterans who were given “free” cigarettes by the tobacco companies. If the enemy didn’t kill our soldiers, their smoking habit did.

She was the mother of twin girls, and after a doctors exam, she boasted that, “I’ll take them (cigarettes) to my grave.” She was right and that happened at age 62. The tobacco companies are still selling their poison today, and their victims are still being “taxed to the grave.”

He was the father of those twin girls, and he drank beer and whiskey regularly until just after his 63 birthday when he died as a result of that bad habit. The alcohol companies are still legally selling their heavily taxed liquors today. The 18th Amendment to the Constitution (Prohibition) was repealed by the 21st Constitutional Amendment.

“Name your poison” was an expression used by bartenders in the older movies. Which poison will you choose?
