Lottery games not a gift

To the Editor:

When is a gift, not a gift? When the “gift” is a chance to win a prize in a game of chance, and the odds of winning a worthwhile prize are practically zero. A lottery ticket would be an example.

Unfortunately there are some people who become so addicted to the chance of winning a valuable prize that they become regular buyers of the “chance for losing” to the extent that they neglect the really important things in their lives.

Did you ever hear the expression, “there’s a sucker born every minute and two to take him” ?

In my opinion, because there are so many Pennsylvania lottery tickets sold regularly, other taxpayers, especially the wealthy, do not have to pay their fair share of Pennsylvania taxes.
