'Democrats are stuck in a real hole'

To the Editor:

"Hey, how you been?" said Louie, when I walked in the door. "Haven't seen you in a while."

"Well, you know, my busy social schedule," I laughed.

"Yeah, right," he said.

"How's Loretta?" I asked.

"She's good, thanks. Has a little trouble getting around, y' know -- aches and pains. But she's good."

There were a lot of guys at Louie's. Ed, whom I hadn't seen in a long time, asked me, "What've you been doing?"

"Not much -- you know, the usual," I answered. "I'm trying to take up golf again, but I think it's a lost cause."

"That's why I never took it up in the first place," laughed Sam. "I stick to pool and darts; that way I never get hit by a golf ball."

"What do you think?" asked Ed.

"About what?" I said.

"What do you mean, 'about what?' The debate, of course. Where've you been - on Mars?"

"Oh, OK. Well, I think Biden did better than I thought he would. I was sure that after he couldn't answer a couple of Trumps' questions, he would turn around and walk off the stage, the way he's done when people ask him questions in public."

Harry jumped in. "The reason he didn't is because he can't anymore. That shows how much he has failed in a very short time. You could almost see him thinking, 'How do I get out of here?', but he doesn't know how anymore. When the debate was over, he just stood there; his wife had to come over and very gently get him down the steps.

"Yeah, he was like someone trapped in a corner he couldn't get out of, " said Frank. "He had no answers, so he started lying - 'no soldiers died on my watch', 'the Border Patrol supports me', all that stuff. And when he ran out of answers, he said ,'Oh, that's just a load of malarkey' "

"He's toast," said Ted.

"Well, I hope he's not the only piece of toast. If he goes down, I hope he pulls that idiot Casey down with him," said Al. This opened up a new line in the conversation, and people turned to Al, who had more to say. "These politicians make me sick," he went on, "and Casey's a real good example of why. Year after year, you don't hear a peep from him, but then when an election is coming up, all of a sudden, he puts all these ads on TV, about how he's for border control, all of a sudden. What a complete load: you know what his voting record is? 98.5% of the time, he votes along with Biden. You know what that means? That he's afraid to think or act for himself; he just sits there, brain dead, pulling the Biden lever when he's told to. The other day, after the debate, he said he was sticking with Biden. He's a total zero."

There was, in the room, the sort of rustling you sense when there's an unspoken agreement with what's just been said, and then the topic switched back to Biden.

"The Democrats are stuck in a real hole," said Art. "There are all sorts of administrative issues that will prevent them from taking off the ticket -- filing deadlines, that sort of thing. And his family keeps putting pressure on to keep him. He's a real problem."

"Biden is not the problem," said Jack. Everybody turned to listen, because Jack is one of those guys who never says anything until he's ready to throw a real zinger into the mix. "Kamala Harris is the problem. If Biden does not step down, who is going to vote Democrat? Then, he loses, and the Democrats are stuck with Trump. But, if Biden wins, at some later date the Democrats are going to have to defend President Kamala Harris, and they're not looking forward to that. They're screwed, either way. But they have a way out, which, like the solution to many problems, simply requires money.

"They have to go to Harris and do whatever it takes to get her to step aside. The obvious attempt will be with a lot of money, but, trust me, if that doesn't work, the Democrats will figure out something that will. It'll probably be messy, but I would not bet against it. Then, with her out of the way, they can have their choice from people who want to be Vice President now and, most likely, President next year. Trump unfortunately is probably a winner only if he is running against Biden."

"Who do you think that next person will be?" said Ed.

"I don't know," answered Jack, "but I hear that Barack was over at Saks Fifth Avenue the other day, buying some new make-up for Michelle."

"Michelle? Never happen. She's said repeatedly that she wouldn't run; she doesn't want any part of this mess."

"Did you bring your wallet?"
