'Free' public education is not free
To the Editor:
What would Thaddeus Stevens, the so-called "father of the free public education in Pennsylvania," think about public schools today charging students an activity fee to participate in some, but not all, school-sponsored activities?
What would he think about public schools today charging spectators for admission to attend some, but not all, school-sponsored events? Who knows for sure what he would think about this, but his idea of a "free" public education was that everything would be paid with public taxation.
Think about it! Do schools really need to be paying for the printing of tickets, ticket booths, ticket sellers and ticket takers, as well as administrators or their representatives to supervise these events, etc.? It's almost like a three-ring circus.
Wouldn't it be better to levy a little extra taxation, if necessary, and drop the activity fees for students and admission charges for other students, parents of participants and other spectators?
