'Republican' officials go against ideals
To the Editor:
I am writing in concern of the County Commissioner's letter to Senator Ward in support of H.B. 847 that was in the Readers' Opinion in the Sentinel on May 15, 2024.
H.B. 847 is a bill that would allow mail-in ballots to be counted beginning seven days before election day this November. Although when you first hear that, it sounds like a good thing, right? Democrats' main talking point on this is to get results on election day because of the number of mail-in ballots. The PA House passed this bill with 102 Democrats in favor of this bill and 99 Republicans against this bill.
The Democrats did not make any concessions or compromises on this bill. Had it included provisions for mandatory voter ID and proof of citizenship for voter registration, it might have garnered bipartisan support. It has not yet passed the PA Senate and hopefully, it will not.
Pre-canvassing before election day is widely regarded as a potential risk to election integrity. This is because employees at county ballot processing centers could potentially access the results of mail-in ballots in real time before election day and allow fraud to take place.
In the Gettysburg Times back in March it was stated that "at least 251,000 ILLEGAL immigrants reside in Pennsylvania with an annual burden of more than $1.6 BILLION on taxpayers." Recently Pennsylvania's switch to Automatic Voter Registration (AVR) is inconsistent with State Law as reported by the Federalist on September 20, 2023. "Democrat Governor Josh Shapiro's decision to unilaterally implement automatic voter registration in Pennsylvania likely violates the Constitution and State Law, several election experts told the Federalist".
I am extremely disappointed in the two "Republican" County Commissioners in this county who are in support of this bill. If the Republicans in the PA House voted against this bill why would our own "Republican" County Commissioners be in support of this bill?
