Readers deserve intelligent discussion
To the Editor:
In a piece published in the March 25 edition of the Sentinel, columnist Armstrong Williams noted that, in today's media environment, it seems nearly impossible to find "good stories that lift the spirit, stories that remind you there is still good in humanity." One reason for this, according to Williams, is a toxic media environment that prefers salacious details and yelling matches over rational discussions.
Almost as if to prove Williams' point about the media, a similar kind of toxicity was present in the other opinion column featured that day. Josh Hammer's piece was written to promote the virtues of J.D. Vance as a GOP choice for Vice President. Before getting to that subject, though, Hammer mentioned President Biden and described him in a disrespectful and derogatory way; his nickname for Vice-President Harris was not any better. Mr. Hammer could have made his point without these comments, but he chose instead to include these cruel and juvenile insults. Remarks such as these only reinforce the incivility of today's political discourse, and should have no place in the pages of the Sentinel.
Armstrong Williams asked us to look for the good in the news. While that may be a difficult thing to do when finding columns for the op-ed page, it should be easy to eliminate those writers who use pointless insults. At the very least, the Sentinel's readers should be presented with civil and intelligent discussions of today's issues.
