The ‘G.I. Bill’ of World War II
To the Editor:
In 1944, the “G.I. Bill” established veterans hospitals, furnished low-interest mortgages for veterans and provided funds for veterans attending colleges or trade schools to help pay for tuition and living expenses.
Presently, the federal government taxes the income of the wealthy and the corporations at lower maximum rates than working class taxpayers, and Pennsylvania recently lowered the corporate income tax rate.
Presently, Pennsylvania has billions of dollars in surplus funds, and now it’s time to do something for students enrolled at institutions of higher education. Yes, it is time to make tuition free for students at community colleges and at the States’ ten publicly owned universities. It will pay for itself with higher tax revenue with higher lifetime earnings from better jobs.
New Mexico already provides tuition-free education for all residents, and Pennsylvania can do the same. This would be an investment in the future, not a current expense!
