'Smart'phones don't make users smarter
To the Editor:
We no longer live in a world where it is that people say "I wonder...." I grew up in a time when that was the most prevalent question asked. We were lucky if someone around us knew the answer to our inquiry.
Long before the iPhone, I, being technologically savvy, would love to utilize the new fangled gadgets that allowed me to answer the question "I wonder...?" It always gave me joy to be able to find answers for people, and it still does.
I've become aware of the fact that because this phrase has left our lexicon, people, now with the universe of known knowledge available at their fingertips, believe that what they think that what they know must be all that they need to know, and no longer wonder. We, as a society, have lost the curiosity that once made us drive to the library and check out a book to satisfy our innate human curiosity.
Because of the smartphone, everyone now believes they are smart. Regardless of how little they actually know about the subject they are talking about. It is my hope that as AI becomes more widely accepted as the answerer of the question "I wonder...," is that more people will utilize it! It will be a wonderful day when we have fewer people believing in things that they could otherwise know as being true or untrue.
