Reader: My 2024 wishlist for Santa
To the Editor:
Dear Santa,
My first wish is for a county-wide public school administration that benefits students educationally and taxpayers financially, while increasing the number of teachers in order to reduce class sizes.
My second wish would be to reduce the state's sales tax rate to benefit the poor and also to enact tax deductions into the State's personal income tax in order to help the working class. The state's high gas tax helps the wealthy corporations and their stockholders by repairing existing roads and constructing new highways for their heavy vehicles.
My third wish is to shift financial responsibility for fire and police protection from the local level to the county level and use paid professional fire fighters in order to reduce or eliminate the need for volunteer firefighters. The State Police could be used elsewhere.
My next wish is to eliminate property taxes by legalizing a graduated income tax, based on the ability to pay, for all levels of government and school districts too. Taxation should be fair for all taxpayers and not just the well-to-do.
My final wish is for a tuition-free regional community college to be located at the Selinsgrove Center that could serve many students from rural and urban areas located within a reasonable distance of the Selinsgrove Center. If the state can reduce the corporate income tax rate by half from nearly 10% to nearly 5%, then it can fund a tuition-free reginal community college for its needy students.
