To the Editor:
I just finished reading "The Terrific Opinion" by Gary Franks of the "Tribune" in today's Sentinel. I agree 100,000%. I have said the same things myself and more in the Letters to the Editor in the past. I think it is high time that we, as Americans, begin to consider anyone that does not agree as enemies of this nation. I don't care if you're a Republican, Democrat, Independent or otherwise; when it comes time to vote in an election, they absolutely do not get our vote. We have to vote. We have to vote the enemies of this nation out of office and stop this madness! Anyone who thinks that the policies of this administration and their open border is a good thing is an enemy of the USA, and therefore, my enemy. It is time for Patriots to step up and fight for this country before it is too late!

Do you realize that most of us live within a few miles of one or more museums of art and history, open during daylight hours, with free admission, created by past and current citizens, on land that was likely donated by a generous benefactor? I'm talking about the cemeteries that dot the landscape. They contain a wealth of historical information and display a variety of artistic expressions.
We will observe Memorial Day on Monday, May 29, 2023. In the years following the Civil War, in which more than 600,000 men died, veterans in small towns in both North and South began decorating the graves of their comrades with flowers. In 1868, veteran John Logan established May 30 as Decoration Day. He chose May 30 because many flowers were in bloom at that time.
Decoration Day later came to be known as Memorial Day, but it only became an official federal holiday in 1971 when the date was adjusted from May 30 to the last Monday in May.
Cemeteries require frequent mowing plus trimming around those gravestones. It costs a lot to maintain them. Most are maintained by churches, too often comprised of dwindling and aging congregations.
Wouldn't it be great if we all sent a tax-deductible contribution, modest or more generous, for each cemetery where our family members are buried? Envision treasurers throughout the region, delightfully swamped spending hours processing checks for a bank deposit. Let's make it happen.
