To The Editor:
This letter is in response to Michael Spahr's letter entitled, "When will liberals use common sense?'. It appeared in The Sentinel on March 29th.
I consider myself socially liberal, so here are a few of my observations about common sense. My common sense tells me that when a new virus that we have no immunity to is killing people, spreading rapidly, and is approaching the point of overwhelming the health care system, it's probably best to stay at home to slow the spread of the disease. My common sense tells me that when 97% of climate scientists believe that global warming is real, it's dangerous, and that we are causing it, it's probably time to do things to mitigate it. My common sense tells me that a diverse population is better than a monoculture where everyone thinks the same, is of the same color, same ethnicity, and same religion. My common sense tells me that teaching our actual history that acknowledges that white America committed genocide on Native Americans and profited heavily from slavery and segregation, is better than teaching a white-washed version which teaches that white America has always been perfect. Finally, my common sense tells me the unalienable "right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness" as defined in the Declaration of Independence, supersedes the 2nd Amendment right to "keep and bear arms," found in the Constitution.
My last observation is that "common sense" is often the go-to position of people that simply do not want to believe in science, disagree with actual history, or are simply afraid of change. Liberals have common sense, but it is informed common sense.
