Banning TikTok stifles young voices
To The Editor:
As I sit in my cubicle at work, I hear my boss speaking to an older person. When the conversation slows, she says something about the spoiled nature of my generation. Generation Z. I know the folks at home are already nodding and agreeing to this statement. My question is why are older generations so obsessed with putting down anyone that is younger to them. I draw your attention to the current debate over banning TikTok. I wonder, pray-tell, what the real reason for the potential ban is about the privacy of us U.S. citizens or is it something more or is it the beginning of stifling the young voices that are outspoken on the app. Our young voices that can change the tide of the stock market with just one video. Our young voices that made The Miami Boys choir, a jewish choir, a household name in our mind. Our young voices who call out the hypocrisy of the government officials that the older generations vote in because not all of us can vote. TikTok is not just an app for silly videos. It bleeds histories we have never learned in a school room. It is an app for news and a place where we can call out the faults of the world. Taking away TikTok will not do anything but stifle the younger generations' voices. The ban will only perpetuate the idea that we, Gen Z, are spoiled little kids who should not have the right to what our "bright" futures hold. That we should just hand the reins of our future to older generations who don't understand how the "new" works. I know that the people that are reading this at home over their breakfast are shaking their heads at my "snowflake" opinions, but maybe having a "snowflake" and being spoiled aren't bad things. Maybe it means that we care about each other so much more than the generations before us.
