Don't use the Bible

to justify hatred

To the Editor:

When did it become so acceptable to be rude? When did some in our society decide that freedom meant the right to tell others what they can and can not do? When did it become the norm for education, science, REALITY, tolerance, and the simple concept of the benefits of diversity, become so divisive? Though I make it a general practice to not make assumptions, I would venture to say, the dawn of time.

Another question I ask, shouldn't we evolve, grow, learn? I have always lived my life to do those things. Evolution, growth, and learning are what I thought life was all about. But now, we have an entire political party that has made it a hallmark of their existence to be as ignorant as humanly possible. All you people that want to make America great again need to ask yourselves, why would you want to go back to the amorphous and undefined "again" when the true nature of life is to go forward, change, grow and be a better version of yourself tomorrow.

Why do so many always revert back to the Bible? Personally, I don't care what a book that tells stories of a mythical man in the sky is willing to kill every man, woman, and child (not to mention countless embryos, fetuses, and precious unborn children) on the planet save for the few on a magical boat. The bible will allow you to justify anything, including slavery, child marriage and incest! In the thousands of years since its inception... science came along. I don't care that you can justify the state killing of people because the bible tells you in Leviticus (G. W. King's letter to the editor March 2.) I prefer to live by the concept that killing is wrong, no matter who does it.

Christianity, is about the teachings of Jesus. Love thy neighbor, treat others as you would want to be treated, feed the hungry and house the poor. Yet, what do the whack-a-doodle, Christian Nationalist, MAGA cultists do, they can't stop invoking the hatred of the Old Testament into every topic. As an agnostic, it boggles my mind as to why so many, Republican Christians favor the vengeful, wrathful, murderous God of the Old Testament over the loving, forgiving, respectful teachings of the New Testament's word from the man your religion is named after, Jesus Christ. I choose to live by the words of the New, not the Old, and I don't care whether or not it has any connection to reality or not, Jesus rocks as far as I'm concerned... God, on the other hand, from the Old Testament...

I am sick and tired of all of this culture war nonsense based on what the Bible says. Nothing any of these Republican introduced laws, restricting what people can learn, or experience, will make your life better. Making drag shows illegal will not make anyone have more money in their pockets. How will anyone's life be better if the vocal minorities fight to allow discrimination against people that do not conform to what you call "normal'' to cover your healthcare expenses? Will you be safer from gun violence if we ban books that acknowledge the existence of people that experience life differently than you? No!

None of this makes any sense. It is all about distraction.
