This is in response to Mr. Spahr's letter of March 7, 2023. I have a few questions for him regarding lessons taught by the Bible. Can he please tell us all the lessons taught to the Native tribes of different indigenous cultures when they were forced to convert to Christianity? I mean, so much for their freedom of religion.
What the lesson being taught to the LGBQT+ community and especially those of the trans community when so-called Christians spew hatred towards them. Is it ignorance to call out people who only spew hate or cherry pick quotes from the Bible? While the stories in the Bible and other religious texts are similar (the story of the Great Flood actually has been proven to date to the Sumerian era which approx 4,000 years before the Bible even existed), they all teach the same thing tolerance and love, which, going by the letters published in The Sentinel from people who claim to be Christian is sorely lacking.
You only have to see the nonsense spewed concerning illegal immigrants especially when you consider that the US was settled illegally by pilgrims and others that followed. You asked if those who don't believe and are without religion possess basic human values -- simple answer -- yes, they can.
You then ask can we respect others who believe -- simple for the most part, yes, except when people who do believe spew nonsense and claim that it says it in the Bible. On that note, have you noticed that it seems that only so-called Christians spew nonsense and get it published on a weekly, if not daily basis? I mean, come on, where is the viewpoint of, say, a member of the Jewish faith or a Muslim or a Buddhist or even the viewpoint of a Satanist?
It seems that in this country only the viewpoints of so-called Christians get to be published. Just last week alone, The Sentinel itself published three letters related to religion. Yet in all my time in this county, I have never seen a letter published by a person from some other faith other than Christian.
You also ask if they somehow have to pay for their ignorance -- let me ask you, what about the ignorance shown by people who do have faith; will they be punished for that, or will they be allowed to continue with that ignorance? You need to ask yourself that. Let me finish by telling you something that my grandfather said: you don't have to go to church to be a good person. Think about that.
