Take back the

Republican Party

To the editor

On Wednesday, Jan 18, Eric Becht expounded on his dismay at the ability of reasonable people to accept as fact the distorted views of the MAGA Republicans. The tone of his opinion is that all Republicans are unintelligent for allowing these distorted facts to persist without resistance. While I am a member of the Democratic Party, I have many friends and acquaintances who declare themselves as Republicans, therefore I know this is not true. However I am dismayed as to why responsible and knowledgeable people let these distorted claims by the MAGA Republicans continue. The MAGA people are spinners of yarns that are untrue and damaging to this country and to the Republican party. To my friends and acquaintances, I am asking you to stand up and declare these individuals to be the scoundrels that they are.

If you think that it is only a few individuals who are guilty of this behavior and therefore not of great concern; that it will all pass away; that reasonable people will still persevere; the facts don't support that. Jan 6 is the most obvious evidence of that; the recent debacle in the House of Representatives which caused the Republicans to vote 15 times to elect a Speaker of The House; the election of George Santos, an admitted liar, as a member of the House; a statement by Georgia Rep. Marjorie Taylor Green that questioned the existence of the plane that hit the Pentagon on Sept. 11, 2001; the admitted theft of classified items from the people of the United States by Donald Trump and most recently the arrest of a politician in New Mexico who actively shot at the houses of Democrats! These are not the things that my friends support or even believe. In spite of that I do not hear them demanding that these actions cease.

On the other side, there is the Democratic party that is declaring Republicans to be fools and that they cannot be trusted. This also has to stop because it is largely untrue and it widens the split and destroys discourse, which is the ability to discuss with reason both sides of a proposal. When communication stops, only one side is heard and many times that results in a less than correct solution to a problem.

For the continued well being of democracy, there has to be a continuation of the two party system. And it must be relegated to two parties, not three or more. Adding more parties diminishes the ability to reach a compromise solution, thus allowing one party to put in place legislation that is beneficial to a minority of the populace and thus putting the rest of us at risk.

We must learn to live with one another, to love one another in a way that helps ALL of humanity. William Shatner was asked if his trip to outer space had changed him in any way; while looking at the beautiful earth below him, he was made aware of the beauty and incredible aspect of the earth that we live in. He came to understand the need that we ALL must dedicate our lives to the welfare of the planet, to each other, to life and to love one another.

Please, on behalf of the majority of citizens of the United States of America, to those who are associated with the REAL republican party, take your party back from the misfits that have taken control.
