Remembered for

your kindness

Letter to the Editor:

Jan. 9, 1954 is a date I have never forgotten. It has been 69 years since my bus driver, Don Croyle, was killed when trying to escape a fire that was overcome by smoke and perished trying to save his dogs.

Mr. Croyle was a Korean War veteran and had shrapnel wounds which were still in his neck and cheek. They would fester and come to the surface where some could be removed.

He was a kind and gentle driver who spent time with students. Children could always count on his smile and caring words that came straight from his heart.

He knew as a little girl my father was in the hospital slowly dying from an incurable disease. His words were always the best way to start the school day and I sat behind him on the bus. He would tell me stories about how he got wounded, etc. He knew each child by name and the kind of home life they had. He more than made up for the cruel life some were forced to live.

If you are a bus driver and have such power, maybe some child 69 years from now will remember you and all your kindness.

You made the difference without even trying. R.I.P, Mr. Croyle.
