This is a reply to Mr. Spahr's letter in the Sept. 6 edition of The Sentinel.
Nowhere in Mr. Spahr's letter does he successfully refute the premise of my previous letters. There is no correlation between the number of abortions and the number of mass murders in the United States. There is, however, a direct correlation between the number of assault type weapons with large capacity magazines and the number of mass murders in the United States. Instead of spinning on and on about various things that have nothing to do with correlation, it would be great if Mr. Spahr demonstrated that there is a direct correlation between the number of mass murders and the number of abortions in the United States. The frequency of mass murders in the U.S. did not increase significantly at any time prior to the lifting of the assault weapons ban. In fact, the number of abortions in the U.S. peaked in 1990 and has been decreasing since then while the number of mass killings has increased dramatically since the lifting of the assault weapons ban in 2004. That's not spin.
I would like to point out that I did not offer a policy response to the mass murder problem in any of my letters. I am a gun owner and have been since I was 12 years old. I, like most of us on the left, support the right to keep and bear arms. The problem with assault type weapons and large capacity magazines is real. The solutions may be implemented at either the state or the federal level but outlawing all guns isn't one of them.
