What is a sovereign ruler?

2 min read

To the editor:

Within my lifetime I have heard much about and was even taught about countries and even states being sovereign. My understanding of what was meant by sovereign was that they had their own government with laws to rule over them.

When I go to the dictionary to find a definition of sovereign, I find that for anything to be sovereign (country, state, person, etc) it must be one that possesses the highest authority without any outside control or influence. Sovereignty then is the possession of uncontrollable power, self-rule without any outside influence of any kind.

I do not believe that any of the countries in the world have this. I don't have to look very hard to find this to be true. Within the past few years nation after nation (including the United States) have given into the control of world organizations such as the World Health Organization and the United Nations and others.

When I turn to the word of God I find only one that stands as sovereign according to the above definition and that is God himself. His word shows us that He is law unto Himself, His purpose is always accomplished, and He is not controlled by any influence outside of Himself (Dan. 4:35; Job23:13; Ps.115:3). His word also states that He is the one that places and removes world leaders and gives them the power, wisdom and knowledge to rule (Dan 2:21; 2 Chron. 20:6; Prov. 8:15).

So God is an outside influence to those who claim to be sovereign and are not. As I turn to Ps. 33:11 I find that all of His plans will be accomplished according to the counsel of His will.

Our only sovereign ruler is God and we need to trust and serve Him above and beyond all else.
