This letter is to answer the letter of George Fisher in the July 15 Sentinel.
The Second Amendment states, "A well-regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed."
It does not say the right of the militia to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed. It calls for the militia to be regulated, not the people.
The young United State of America had just recently defeated the oppressive government of England to win its freedom. The purpose of the Second Amendment was to protect the people from an oppressive government, foreign or domestic. That is why it is referred to as the right that protects all the other rights.
