I don't live near the southern border, in fact, I live in Mifflin County.
But at this point, I couldn't ignore the crisis at the border even if I tried. Twenty-four hours in the news cycle rarely go by without some tragedy related to the border making headlines.
The news of the abandoned tractor-trailer with over 60 people inside astonished me. Pressed against the walls and each other, waiting in the dark and praying to be let out, they were marooned with no ventilation, food or water.
Of those on board, 53 migrants died and more than a dozen were hospitalized; four of the twelve were children. And if that isn't enough to make you stop and think, just last month alone, 2,071 pounds of fentanyl were seized at the southern border. To put this into perspective, that is enough for 469 million lethal doses.
It's one thing to mourn tragedies that have passed, but what are we doing to prevent them in the future? Border agents are working tirelessly to arrest drug and human traffickers, let alone those who enter illegally without contraband, but they're overwhelmed. More than 2 million illegal immigrants have escaped into the U.S. since Biden took office. The Biden administration coined these escaped migrants as "gotaways."
Worst of all, Joe Biden hasn't visited the southern border as president. Rather, since taking office, Biden has spent more than 200 days on vacation. And when he isn't on vacation, he's signing legislation that prioritizes the hiring of 87,000 IRS agents to audit the middle-class instead of hiring 87,000 CBP agents to secure our southern border.
This November, we must hold Joe Biden and the Democrats accountable for the chaos they've turned a blind eye to at the southern border.
